Do we have enough bike parking in Columbia City for the next 8 years? There's no plan to add more

Bruce Harrell hasn't made needed improvements to Lake Washington Boulevard because he's listening to comments like this one from a Coexist LWB organizer and leader instead of the professional city staff.
LWB design and safety is absolutely NOT DEFICIENT. It meets and beats Vision Zero parameters unlike a significant number of other arterials in Southeast Seattle or the City in general. However, it seems to me that you always want to hype up ANY kind of unfortunate mishap that occurs on LWB without that same concern for other streets. Could it be that you, Greenways, Cascade and other cycling organizations just want to make an issue out of any and all misfortunes on LWB so that you can ultimately claim it your exclusive domain? You want LWB closed to cars from Mt. Baker Beach to Seward Park. Please excuse me if I mischaracterized your position.

It's a good thing no one was walking on the pedestrian path when this happened as there's no protection between the road and the path. We can't rely on luck for the next incident though. We need to make changes to this road to address dangerous driver behavior before someone dies.

There was a pretty bad crash on LWB at ~6pm tonight when a driver plowed their car into a tree. SFD responded to perform a rescue extraction of at least one person. Thankfully based on what I can find it seems like all of the passengers and driver were ok.

We are all getting a masterclass (derogatory) from Bainbridge on how to kill a housing project
typewriteralley.bsky.social
Update on Bainbridge Island's beleaguered affordable housing project: the city was set to hold a public hearing on a zoning ordinance that would allow it to move forward, but a SEPA challenge has been filed by a former council candidate.

This is going to add weeks if not months of added process.

That is what they are expecting! Someone to come to their door, ask them what they want, and for them to be able to say, "Nothing. Keep things the same." And when people object to the process, what they are really objecting to is the outcome.
briware.bsky.social
And even if you’re not already on the board or mailing list, if you realize you don’t know that info, it’s probably not hard to just go look it up yourself. What are they expecting, that someone calls them up personally or comes and nails the info to their door every day?

Bruce Harrell's comprehensive plan legalized corner stores only on literal street corners, so he's not really even doing everything possible to build "corner stores" in neighborhoods.
ericacbarnett.bsky.social
Harrell talks about how much the city pays for food security, but that the municipal grocery store is an "unproven" idea. "The smarter approach is to get as many corner stores involved" as possible, "so we're doing everything possible to address food insecurity." And that's the end!

Ok, I think I may have figured out where this number came from.

"Homelessness increased 18 percent, from 653,104 people during the 2023 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count to 771,480 people during the 2024 PIT."

Missed this while typing: Harrell told the crowd, which was not giggling, "You can giggle if you want, but 18% of Americans are homeless." This is not true.

I'm open to the idea that we don't have enough parking, but when we have this much open paid parking within a few blocks, maybe the problem isn't a lack of parking, it's that drivers are delusional about expecting to park out front (and for free).
jrock08.bsky.social
SDOT says that Columbia City doesn't have enough parking so we have to create more paid parking on a few streets which are currently part of the RPZ zone, but the offstreet paid parking we have isn't filling up.

I really hope the teachers that asked their students to go to this meeting to learn about civic engagement see this comment.

Tuned into the Bellevue Planning Commission meeting tonight where a resident of Eastgate is complaining that high school students who attended an open house on a neighborhood plan in Eastgate were "bribed" with extra credit to be there, pushing for youth to not be given "equal weight" with others.

Why isn't Seattle willing to build new modal filters? People seem to really like the ones we have.

I really want to know what the coherent angle of attack here is supposed to be.

Is it that Wilson is out of touch? Her living situation now undermines this

Is it that Wilson won't follow through? Her political wins undermine this.

Metro plans to budget an additional 30,000 service hours to weather the impact of Revive I-5 construction closures, ON TOP OF an additional 24,000 service hours to help bus routes that it expects to continue getting stuck in worse traffic.

(Where are those bus lanes, Seattle?)

We should save money and not build the spine if this is how Federal Way is going to act.

Also tonight at the Federal Way council: a discussion of what "public benefits" Sound Transit will be required to provide for the privilege of building an operations and maintenance facility in Federal Way that's necessary to sustain the expansion of a regional transit system.

I've seen* Bruce Harrell in Columbia City.

* I saw his blacked out Chevy suburbans which he entered without interacting with any people

Can't say I've ever seen the mayor just wandering through a neighborhood on foot

It was interesting that last week, as I was walking the streets in the Central District, a person came up to me. They were white, just to be candid with you, and they asked me what I was doing there. That was pretty offensive, given the fact that my grandparents, my Japanese grandparents, grew up in the Central District, and I grew up there. They asked me what I was doing there.

CHS: Wow.

Harrell: And I just smiled and said, “Working.” So let’s change.
