“Largely ceremonial” does feel like the most honest way to talk about the U.S. Congress in 2025
carlquintanilla.bsky.social
“.. Inside the White House, top advisers joke that they are ruling Congress with an “iron fist,” according to people who have heard the comments. Steve Bannon, the influential Trump ally, likened Congress to the Duma, the Russian assembly that is largely ceremonial.”

I can't believe you didn't pick the archaeology one, but if you are going to do one of those, I definitely recommend (ish) Love in the Great Smoky Mountains and I also beg you to bring me on to talk about it bsky.app/profile/jstp...

You've probably seen the photos of the "Arc de Trump," spotted in the Oval Office.

Now read our story behind the models — and how initial plans for a temporary, triumphal arch have given way to Trump's desire to build a permanent monument.

Scoopy details at @washingtonpost.com:
Trump eyes a triumphal arch to mark America’s 250th anniversary
The arch would be constructed across from the Lincoln Memorial, on a small patch of federal land currently occupied by a traffic circle.

Money is the power to avoid consequences. Money is the power to achieve goals.
Screenshot from the Simpsons where Homer's brain is teaching him that $20 is better than a peanut because $20 can be used to buy many peanuts. "Money can be exchanged for goods and services."

Money literally is power. Having a lot of money is the power not to have to do things you don't want to do, and to have other people do those things for you. It is also the power to have things done that you want to have done.

“The problem with billionaires isn’t that they’re hoarding money that would otherwise pay for a Scandinavian social utopia. It’s that their money has become a source of wildly distorted political power that allows a few men with extremist views to wreak havoc on the rest of us.”

I used to be able to keep these DAILY MEMOs to under 3 minutes, the last couple videos have been impossible to. ICE is escalating in Los Angeles, just look at the article version with every incident highlighted. This is only what we could confirm, only what we know of. @lataco.bsky.social

There is no version of civil war or revolution that ends without massive pain and suffering, mostly by people who have no role in events or ability to affect them.

Well, the point is we now can identify a negative effect from past deorbits, so we know there's going to be *some* effect from future ones. Just because we don't know how bad doesn't mean "not bad."

As a primatologist, Jane Goodall was a huge inspiration to me. I admired the way she describes chimpanzee behavior with such detail and empathy, and she’s inspired so many people and advocated for chimpanzee conservation and welfare.

However, I'm dismayed at what her narrative leaves out (1/10)

Feeling helpless about the horrors of our dictatorship? Wisdom and political resistance art from an exhibit on the indigenous Australian Yirrkala people: "The painting's purpose is to protect the Law, and we can do that by making them hit their eyes with their full power." Djambawa Marawili 1997
Australian Yirrkala patterns of mostly triangles in a golden warmer yellow with the silver material below etched weave into a circle, and head of a snake with ovals in the center circle Australian Yirrkala patterns look like weaving zig zag crossed in lines in white, espresso brown,grey/silver from material etched beneath
Sections criss-cross and half of the lines are cream with mocha brown, the other half are honeycomb and more intricate between each line Australian Yirrkala patterns look like weaving an arc of water with ovals and loops crossed in lines in white, espresso brown,grey/silver from material etched beneath

I admire the FBI agent who declined to perp-walk James Comey. However, I can’t sit by while anyone portrays that as the law enforcement norm before Trump. In fact law enforcement, state and federal, routinely does gratuitous perp walks.

There's a bitter irony here for Comey, who likely ordered similarly unnecessary perp walks on many people throughout his career, because that's what law enforcement thinks is a good thing to do regardless of the presumptive innocence of the accused. Don't cry for him; fix the system.

“The FBI is now actively working to put together a team to arrest Comey between now and his court appearance on Thursday, but other FBI supervisors have also refused to cooperate […] The expectation is that the FBI will eventually find somebody.”
The FBI is weighing an arrest and perp walk for Comey — and suspended an agent for refusing to help, sources say
The FBI is considering carrying out a "showy" arrest and perp walk of the agency's now-indicted ex-Director James Comey, sources tell CBS News.
