apparently from a clinical psychology standpoint our brains are literally incapable of processing this constant barrage of horror, and then thousands of people's reactions to those horrors, without completely shutting down, or something

me, who's fun at parties: what did you THINK societal and climate collapse was gonna look like?

Her exact words were “decrease media consumption.”

A student brought to my attention that nobody in my classroom was alive when 9/11 happened. I thought that could not be correct, but it was. I lived through that day and will never forget it. My heart goes out to my city and the people in/of it, who suffered unimaginable losses. 24 long years.

That would seem to be their goal/the point

Right like we need to be able to adapt to the moment and current events and our students‘ and our own experiences the course description is a guide my god
rebeccabestir.bsky.social
yea, course descriptions are very brief. they definitely are not a complete listing of all topics covered in the course, nor should they be

More than a dozen Russian drones entered Poland overnight, prompting NATO to scramble fighter jets to shoot them down in what Western officials described on Wednesday as a dangerous escalation of the war in neighboring Ukraine.
Poland Says It Shot Down Russian Drones That Entered Its Airspace
The incursion marked the first time that NATO fighters engaged enemy targets in their own airspace. Poland’s leader called it “a large-scale provocation.”

Does your university have policies around students recording professors without consent?

Too many professors think academic freedom and tenure will always protect us. We need to be better organized as workers.

Do you/we try to spread ourselves out to fight all the horrors at once or do we choose one horror and fight back deeply with focus? The multitude of attacks feels very intentional. I wish we would be equally intentional in our collective responses.

“Ur-Fascism can come back under the most innocent of disguises. Our duty is to uncover it and to point our finger at any of its new instances—every day, in every part of the world.” -Umberto Eco

I have great empathy for people who are trying to appease, what I can only ever call from now on, fascists. I don’t have a better or more precise word But fascist hunger is insatiable. It cannot be appeased. We have to stand and fight now.

We teach what we teach. The end. The first amendment exist or it doesn’t. We are in the business of education or we aren’t. There’s no middle ground.

Anyone want to see what it costs for a one bedroom apt at a continuing care retirement community in MA? I really cannot even.
‘s monthly of over $4000 for one bedroom apartment Buy and fees for one bedroom apartment are nearly $500,000

How are you all...like...living? Not a rhetorical question. How are you getting through the day with the onslaught of horrors? How do you decide where to invest your time and energy? How are you balancing self and community care?

What We Talk About When We Talk About Student Engagement

This morning while we were walking our dog, our elderly neighbor called out to us. He was on the ground, having fallen outside in the middle of the night while walking his own dog. We had to call 911, and then call his kids.

Things are hard. They're really, really hard. I've been thinking today about how we often ignore life's challenges in the name of "student engagement."

I wrote something about this pre-COVID, and I think it's held up well.

Is our desire to engage students always in their best interest? How can we adapt our understanding of student engagement to the realities of our students's lives?

With all the other things he’s done and the crime he’s committed and bragged about, it really does make you wonder what’s in those files doesn’t it?

The fascists won't care about x, y, z is truly not the point. Do YOU care about x, y, z? If yes, then it matters.
