this is a reminder that we dont have to settle for newsom in 2028

And that’s a resounding NO on putting sexual predators back into positions of power!
Thank you for this! It’s really helpful to read something that contextualizes this research, after seeing a couple of news articles about it
My husband says that it’s also a bit like living with the impenetrable whims of the Presger. Toddlers! They’re beyond the limits of human understanding
Having a toddler is sort of like living with Anaander Mianaai in that she definitely sees herself as the emperor of the known universe
My toddler has only figured out the pronoun “she” and refers to everyone that way, like a good Radchaai citizen #ancillaryjustice

This magazine literally formed 90% of my personality in my early 20s. I learned SO MUCH theory from this publication.

Dozens of people sounded off against MPD's cooperation with ICE during a D.C. Council on Thursday, but it's unclear what lawmakers will be able to do about it. My rundown on the hearing: 51st.news/dc-council-h...

I think about this post all the time. ALL THE TIME. When I get my hands on The Vitamin, it's over for you folks.
A boss who calls on weekends but respects work life balance! What bullshit! If you call me while I'm with my kid, you don't get points for acting like I can call you back later.
For folks with extra time to volunteer or spare cash to donate, @thrive-dc.bsky.social is an INCREDIBLE organization that does amazing work helping people in the DC community with groceries, hot meals, showers, and tons of other services. They’re always looking for volunteers!

lotta people saying to donate to food banks which is great, but if that’s not available to you, often they are desperate for volunteers! shifts can be short, a few hours when you’re free, doing stuff like sorting boxes, making sandwiches, or delivering meals, depending on the org
That experience made it concrete for me, to see cases of 15 dozen eggs for instance, and realize that if I donated directly to them, they could get way more than if I bought groceries and brought them in myself. Give money to your local food bank if you can! And give out treats on Halloween.
This is exactly right. As Amy says, food banks can stretch a dollar much further than you can at the grocery store anyway. I had the opportunity to interview the chef at a soup kitchen once for a project, and he told me how much food they could buy from suppliers for much less than retail--
I wrote something about why handing out Ramen and Easy Mac on Halloween is performative at best and insidiously anti-welfare at worst. amycolleen.medium.com/no-kid-wants...

As I've said many times, you can't build the mass deportation apparatus without first building the police state apparatus.
New: Videos show ICE/CBP agents are scanning peoples' faces on the street to verify citizenship. ICE has tool to instantly look up unprecedented number of databases with just a photo

“I’m an American citizen so leave me alone”

“Alright, we just got to verify that”

ICE and CBP Agents Are Scanning Peoples’ Faces on the Street To Verify Citizenship
Videos on social media show officers from ICE and CBP using facial recognition technology on people in the field. One expert described the practice as “pure dystopian creep.”

This is an amazing story that I’d never heard before, thank you for boosting!
Obviously this is racist and evil, but there’s also just something very stupid about the idea of being mad that when new neighbors move in next door, they’re people you don’t already know. That’s how moving into a new home works!
I like the idea of a radical re-phoneticization (?) of English, just for fun.
It definitely does NOT feel safe to call 911 in DC, but there are times when there is no alternative. When you've witnessed an assault and the victim is bleeding, you have to call 911 to try to get them medical help right away. But the response from emergency services can make things so much worse.
"When we call 911, who will respond? Is it safe to call 911? Why are calls for clarity and transparency going unanswered? These are the questions that are asked when lines are blurred [between MPD and federal agents]," says ANC Commissioner Miguel Trindade Deramo. "Public trust is eroded."
