The story deepens! We now know the person who brought a #Roman tombstone to New Orleans was a US soldier stationed in Italy during WW2; I like to think that Sextus Congenius Verus - the tombstone 'owner', & a military man himself - would have understood...

Now I'm interested: Who else had to undo 'AI' in academic texts? What were your experiences with this?
kristelzilmer.bsky.social
My experience earlier this year: I had to spend a few days rescuing a text that I myself had written and which had then been sent through LLM by a colleague and turned into something completely different. Such a huge waste of time and mental energy.
petertarras.bsky.social
We see this in other fields too, where skill sets are no longer applied to creating stuff, but to correct ‘AI’ slop. I think this is definitely a huge waste of time, and the idea that ‘AI’ could save time in research is a big lie. But perhaps it’s important to make this experience ... (5/x)

Just arrived. The posthumously published book of my late colleague, Dr Colmán Etchingham. Thanks to everyone who saw it through to publication. We plan to hold an event in Maynooth to mark its publication (details to follow). Available to order here: boydellandbrewer.com/book/vikings...

This happened while writing scholarly texts for a specific purpose. Things went wrong, as LLM was suddenly added and used uncritically. The intentions may've been to enliven/smoothen? The result... well, there's only so much delving and underscoring one can take; never mind the direct errors.

I also spent time explaining how I could see what had been done, and exemplifying all the resulting problems. I did this as nicely and patiently as I could hoping that this would not happen again.

“I’ll declare war on you if you don’t give me the peace prize” is an incredible bit

And this: “They were both too weak to matter, and a grave danger to things that did. What really mattered was the big picture.”
This very same approach is still a part of many (supposedly informed) conversations today.

“The same editor told me firmly that whatever the ‘nationalists’ in the ‘tiny Soviet Baltic republics’ might think, they were never going to be independent. They are just too small. Ukraine was never going to be independent either. It was too big.“

“The problem with big aid organisations is that their approach is based on training and advice […]They tell people what to do and how to spend their money […]direct cash support has shown that when people living in poverty receive money, they know best what matters to them, and they invest in that.”

Very happy to finally see this in the flesh today: the remains of an early tenth-century calendar from Landévennec, Brittany, whose entry for the year 913 contains an annotation that the local coastal monastery of Winwaloe was attacked by vikings during that year.

Copenhagen, KB Thott 239 2°, f.10r
A medieval manuscript page from the tenth century, on vellum. Text in black ink and red rubrication using Carolingian miniscule. A marginal annotation on a manuscript, containing the (abbreviated) Latin sentence: 'Eodem anno destructum est monasterium sancti winualoei a normannis' (translation: 'In the same year, the monastery of saint Winwaloe was destroyed by Northmen').

it's ridiculous how some people seem to think the only possible reason to do a humanities phd is to become a tenured professor. i use the considerable fruits of my philological training all day every single day to overanalyse every word anyone says to or around me within an inch of its life
