I always say that everyone who attends a protest is marching for 10 people who can't.

Are you one of those 10 people? Can you spread the word? Pack lunches for friends who are going? Donate? Make zines? It's all The Work!

AND! There are a lot of things to do that AREN'T specific to this Saturday ⬇️

If you can’t attend a protest, there are many other ways to resist:

• Get connected to the resistance: fiftyfifty.one

• Get trained on noncooperation:

• Get engaged in politics:

I tried to re-read The Stars Like Dust when I was an adult and was horrified by the way he wrote women’s parts in that. Not overtly rude but incredibly dismissive.

Fascism is a character failing. It requires a surrender to narcissism in a universe with no empathy, no confrontation by others.

Education has no bearing on that.
nberlat.bsky.social
Heidegger, Pound, Webern, Jung all supported the Nazis.

fascism is a moral error, not an intellectual one. being educated isn't a prophylactic.

Most of these people are deeply trained, or at least highly educated, in humanities. Knowing isn’t being.

And when I re-read Asimov as an adult, the misogyny really stood out. It’s right there in the stories… not just in how he treated actual women.

It was hard to be a sci-fi fan asa woman back in the day. But we were, anyway.

Also, Lord, if it's not too much to ask, could you please find it in your merciful heart to forgive me for not mentioning Joni Mitchell earlier in this thread, as one of the greatest vocal and instrumental virtuosos who ever lived, who also composed a catalog that redefined the popular songbook?

Pope Leo quotes Hannah Arendt:

“The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction and the distinction between true and false no longer exist."

Pope Leo calls for news agencies to stand as bulwark against "post-truths," lies and manipulation
Pope Leo XIV has encouraged international news agencies to stand firm as a bulwark against the "ancient art of lying" and manipulation.

This is scary - where is the help ppl need?

Extreme rain from a typhoon in Alaska seems to have floated homes while ppl were sheltering in them.

Hoping everyone affected is found safe.

We can remember Goodall’s accomplishments and legacy while recognizing that National Geographic created a narrative that erased the local people who contributed to her research. Her African colleagues deserve to be credited, not erased (10/10).

They believe it will happen to someone else, not to them and their families. Like biblical plagues. And make the world better for them when the rest of us are out of the way. 🦠

My publisher’s been very patient. I’m not doing everything I said I’d do to promote this book (out in a few weeks) because I’m an organizer in a city under federal attack. My days are full and emotionally exhausting. Any help getting the word out means a lot. It's a book people need right now.

MIT rejects "compact" proposed by the Trump administration.
MIT prez wrote: it "would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution" and "is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone."

Hitler had plans for one of those in Berlin, too. Unlike Trump, he could draw it for himself.

“Isn’t horrible that billionaires can’t just buy a university, fire all the tenure faculty, and remake it in their image like Bezos did with the Post?”

That’s the question posed by Trump’s Compact.
kzhill.bsky.social
Should the universities comply on syllabi and fake justice concerns, and keep the hospitals open for desperate people?

Or stand firm and let the admin force the closure of the hospitals?

You pick.

If it were me, I’d recognize that this is brinksmanship and let them try to close the hospitals.
kzhill.bsky.social
Here’s the dilemma for many university systems, including the univ of California:

the admin is threatening to cut them off from federal funding for university hospitals.

It’s like the Heinz ethical dilemma about whether he should steal meds he can’t afford for his wife who needs them. 🧵

Somebody in the US is going to get hurt by their own government, to feed their desire for a liberal scapegoat.

My gosh. After the US bombed multiple boats in the middle of the ocean, murdering people on grounds that they were allegedly "carrying drugs," the US Attorney General says "Just like we did with cartels, we're going to take the same approach, President Trump, with Antifa."

As I observed in my Substack Round Up this past week, the endgame of the military strikes against drug cartels in international waters is to lay the groundwork to use lethal military force against Americans at home. Pay attention open.substack.com/pub/asharang...

Always fun to watch the ocean migrate onto the land.
