Time to call the witte wief- we need some healing help.
"East of Eefde, where the forest thins and a village creeps ever closer, there lies De Witte Wieven Slok, a shadowed hollow where the snow never seems to melt. And there, they say, lingers a lone witte wief, bound to her grove and her solitary vigil."

Give some thought to where you exercise outdoors in the SF Bay Area today - air quality is better in the green zones!

This is how capitalism (taking advantage of short-sighted human greed) will lead people into the disasters that a small number of very wealthy ppl will then profit from.
This is the correct take on the whole Zillow fiasco

(and fire maps, and hurricane maps)

2023 PCAST report essentially called for this as well - it's been a recognized gap in capacity for years bidenwhitehouse.archives.gov/wp-content/u...

Take a second today to tell the CEO of AT&T that they’re cowards for dropping DEI, and that we will all remember that they caved.
Well I just wrote the CEO to complain. I recommend everyone do that.

ICE won’t tell anyone where 6-year-old Yuanxin is. He was separated from his dad at a mandatory check-in. The cruelty is unfathomable & makes us all unsafe. We must fight for freedom from fear & tyranny. We must abolish ICE & reunite all families separated by ICE.

After AAUP UConn faculty members and students were were dispersed in a Sept 10 rally, they came back to defend academic freedom stronger than ever...in inflatable costumes!

Nothing will stop higher ed workers from exercising their rights—while having fun, too!

This man has lost it.
Trump: "Is Trump in good health? I sit here, I do four news conferences a day. I ask questions from very intelligent lunatics -- you people. I give the right answers. There's never a scandal. There's never a problem. I give you answers that solve your little problems."

Look, every single “deal” reached by a university with the Trump administration is a moral stain that will be seen with deep embarrassment once we’re through this. But for Northwestern to do this now, when the administration is visibly weakened, is even more shameful and inexcusable.

So let me get this straight- in a week, Russian trolls can cause Americans to think something is true that isn’t true?

Time to read the paper.
Yesterday I posted a paper about the danger of social media algos pushing more and more people into extreme right-wing views. It now only takes a week to change someone’s view by the same amount that used to take 3 years.

I fully expect calls for violence against vaccine proponents to explode.
Reranking partisan animosity in algorithmic social media feeds alters affective polarization
Today, social media platforms hold the sole power to study the effects of feed-ranking algorithms. We developed a platform-independent method that reranks participants’ feeds in real time and used thi...

Robots don’t belong on the sidewalk. Period.

Propose a city ordinance.
Just as you thought food delivery companies couldn't inflict any more misery on society:

Instead of using lowly-paid gig economy contractors to deliver groceries, they're replacing humans with robots, who, in turn, force humans off the pavement into road traffic.

One of the reasons i love tolkien is the theme that despair is an enemy

and it makes clear you don’t need to have constant hope, you can get by with grim determination or spite but never despair
You can be as terrified or nonplussed or unperturbed as you like; the sun will still rise tomorrow & the rent will still be due on the 31st. The world has no romantic narratives for its fate except those we invent, because the world does not die. That is our privilege.
I said it elsewhere, but it’s weirdly exhilarating and addictive to be terrified all the time, and the people addicted to it, when they say this, may as well be saying “I can stop at any time, it’s just the world doing this *to* me.”

The real meaning of Thanksgiving - here’s an opportunity to support Indigenous organizing in the US.

I just did, and so can you!
Every year around this time, I ask folks to consider doing something in support of Native people. This year, please join me in supporting the Native Organizers Alliance as they build grassroots power, defend Native voting rights, and equip our people for collective struggle through skill-building.
