My male role models were my grandfathers and uncles. WW2 and Vietnam vets. Small business owners. Blue collar workers. A cop.

All of the “manosphere” stuff I hear is just so odd. Like, every man I grew up around — inarguably macho guys — would just call these people creeps, not “manly.”

Went to San Rafael CA for the slightly lower #KingTide today, and saw water leaking through a masonry wall around the district’s pump station.

Which reminded me that an earthquake would break some of those pumps (it’s a liquefaction zone) and flood it way before sea level rise will.

Cascade.

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.

Seriously? Pantone’s color of the year is “a white hue”?

@theonion.com
Pantone describes its color of the year, “Cloud Dancer,” as “a discrete white hue offering a promise of clarity.” In today’s polarized sociopolitical climate, this selection offers disengagement at best and channels rage-bait at worst.
Pantone’s Color of the Year Sounds About White
After the year we’ve had, going with Cloud Dancer can easily be interpreted as a piercing dog whistle.

Interesting to consider the impacts of urban heat islands on urban culture and nightlife.
"Getting through the heatwave was all about making it to the evening. That’s when the sun would finally begin to relent and the people of Jodhpur, a city in India, could at last go outside."

Satellite images have revealed activity shifting on a huge scale.

I have to assume that a lot of these parents have never had to be genuinely afraid for their children’s lives, because that is something that changes you on a fundamental level. And that’s just not a state of affairs that was possible any time before vaccines, when HALF of kids didn’t grow up

Time to call the witte wief- we need some healing help.
"East of Eefde, where the forest thins and a village creeps ever closer, there lies De Witte Wieven Slok, a shadowed hollow where the snow never seems to melt. And there, they say, lingers a lone witte wief, bound to her grove and her solitary vigil."

This is how capitalism (taking advantage of short-sighted human greed) will lead people into the disasters that a small number of very wealthy ppl will then profit from.
This is the correct take on the whole Zillow fiasco

(and fire maps, and hurricane maps)

2023 PCAST report essentially called for this as well - it's been a recognized gap in capacity for years bidenwhitehouse.archives.gov/wp-content/u...

Take a second today to tell the CEO of AT&T that they’re cowards for dropping DEI, and that we will all remember that they caved.
Well I just wrote the CEO to complain. I recommend everyone do that.

ICE won’t tell anyone where 6-year-old Yuanxin is. He was separated from his dad at a mandatory check-in. The cruelty is unfathomable & makes us all unsafe. We must fight for freedom from fear & tyranny. We must abolish ICE & reunite all families separated by ICE.

Look, every single “deal” reached by a university with the Trump administration is a moral stain that will be seen with deep embarrassment once we’re through this. But for Northwestern to do this now, when the administration is visibly weakened, is even more shameful and inexcusable.
