Great 🧵; this is the main point. If the President can spend money on whatever he wants without congressionally mandated appropriations we don't have separation of powers, or even really a constitutional republic (at least under the terms of our constitution). We just don't.

I'm sure the MAGA Republicans who cheered when Virginia Foxx told a reporter to shut up will not see any problem with this at all and excuse me while I utter a loud, bitter laugh:

"Congresswoman Pelosi, are you at all concerned that the new January 6th committee will find you liable for that day?... Why did you refuse the National Guard on January 6th?" Steinberg asks Pelosi.

That's when Pelosi turned and called her out.

"Shut up! I did not refuse the National Guard," Pelosi said. "The president didn't send it. Why are you coming here with Republican talking points as if you're a serious journalist?"

The Milgram experiment was a series of social psychology studies conducted by Stanley Milgram in the 1960s to measure the willingness of participants to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts that conflicted with their personal conscience. In the experiment, participants were told they were administering electric shocks to a "learner" (an actor) for incorrect answers, and a majority of them continued to administer what they believed were lethal shocks, even when the learner protested. The experiment is famous for demonstrating the powerful influence of authority and the tendency for people to obey orders, even when those orders are morally questionable.
