Liane G. Benning is a biogeochemist studying mineral-fluid-microbe interface processes. She is a Professor of Interface Geochemistry at the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, Germany. Her team studies various processes that shape the Earth Surface with a special focus on two aspects: the nucleation, growth and crystallisation of mineral phases from solution and the role, effects and interplay between microbes and minerals in extreme environments. She is also interested in the characterisation of these systems, developing in situ and time resolved high resolution imaging and spectroscopic techniques to follow microbe-mineral reactions as they occur. .. more

Melting over 80.6% of the area of the Greenland Ice Sheet. This is the highest value in our data set, which starts in 1981.

Below the map is a chart that compares 2025 melting to the 1981-2010 average. The average melting peaks in mid-July at about 35%. For the last few days, melting has occurred over roughly 80% of the area of Greenland, with a maximum melt area of 80.6% on 24 July 2025. This is the highest value in our dataset, which starts in 1981.

IAVCEI cancel one of their meetings due to the ongoing situation in the US 🌋

In agreement with the Cities and Volcanoes Commission and the
IAVCEI Executive Committee, the Local Organizing Committee for the 13th Cities on Volcanoes (COV13) conference, originally planned for July 2026 in Bend, Oregon (U.S.A.), has made the difficult decision to postpone the event to a future date.
Recent developments have created uncertainty around our ability to confidently and effectively host the conference in 2026 and to welcome attendees without concern.
This decision follows many months of collaboration with more than 70 local, regional, and international partners to shape an engaging and meaningful program. We recognize this news will be disappointing, but we believe it is the most responsible choice under the current circumstances, grounded in care for our colleagues and partners.
With continued support from the Cities and Volcanoes Commission and IAVCEl, we are already exploring the possibility of hosting COV in Bend in 2030 or 2032, and we remain hopeful for opportunities to gather in the future.
