Me, when disagreeing with someone who seems to be able to hear and respond and modify: generally do the same, sometimes end up with a great discussion and even a new follow.

Me, once I have decided someone is an obdurate fuckhead:

It will never be something I understand, but I am happy that others are happy, and especially that the sports accounts are coming over here in sufficient numbers for it because I know that was a complaint on here for a while.
lizamazel.bsky.social
anyway I'm even less a football person than baseball person (at least I understand the rules there) -and- not sure how I feel about Bad Bunny's music yet, but I will be watching the Superbowl halftime show because, you know.

Truth. The world may be on fire, but I can at least share ONE bit of joy with the world.
lizamazel.bsky.social
see even though I am not at all a sports person this makes me happy.

i understand the appeal in theory if I think of how I feel about (various) fandoms, the experience in general.

but anyway, yay team (fill in the team of your choice)

The sheer joy of sports BlueSky right now is making me smile. This is what social media is supposed to be.

deep down, I think, they know creating itself is the real power and they WANT to, they really do; but, whatever's keeping them stuck in the pathology is keeping them from making the art.

note there are numerous narcissists who DO make art, even good art, so this isn't a 1:1 correlation
lizamazel.bsky.social
but yeah more to the point I hope other Republicans break away.

we know many who won't, Abbott and DeSantis among them.
lizamazel.bsky.social
between that and firing--I think also charging?--the fundiewhack Education Super, maybe there's hope for OK yet
lizamazel.bsky.social
something or other "they were coming right for us," idk.

whatever it is, they're not good at this.

See also: clout chasing.

Why plagiarize? Why build an aggregator? Yeah maybe money, but more often it's this deep rooted belief, shared by many, that the whole point of anything is to be admired.

it's not a coincidence that we have the nadir of pathological narcissism "leading" the US right now
lizamazel.bsky.social
it's really an expression of narcissism. Something/someone that makes the creative thing for you so you can take credit believes that the whole point of anything is, as Eve Harrington had it, "applause. Like waves of love coming over the footlights..."
faineg.bsky.social
there’s this weird idea a lot of people seem to have about how all of us writers and artists must secretly want to use AI and are merely resisting temptation for ethical reasons, and like, no, it’s not hard for me to resist drinking the bowl of Piss With Glass In It actually

I write because I love writing. I love writing even when I'm struggling with a writing problem that is killing me. Finding a way through that problem is both intensely rewarding and also helps me become a better writer. There is no reason for me to ever outsource that.

I think it's actually more what a really narcissistic person thinks. "I'll pay money to make amazing art and writing that I can take credit for and get people admiring and adoring me for it. Isn't that why anyone ever does anything?"

one does wonder what the people who want to outsource pretty much all of their cognitive function to genAI consider to be “fun”
mhkmhk.bsky.social
It does seem like a thinking a really depressed person would have. Like 'who can bother living, I'll pay money to have the magic box do things so I can lay in a dark room for weeks'

there is a certain congruence between claiming that AI can replace artists and writers and being the kind of person who thinks shooting a caged lion is honorable and fun
packbawky.bsky.social
Yeah, it's like, seriously... Fun. Have you heard of it? Have you never done something for hours, just for fun? Wouldn't you feel cheated out of your fun if...I don't know, you pressed the wrong button and your Pokédex filled in, or a drone swooped in and shot your buck for you?

But what if the AIs are trans?! They'd have an unfair advantage at sports! And we would never know because we couldn't test their chromosomes!
faineg.bsky.social
It is notable that while a lot of important people are running around right now braying about how AI can replace the work of creative people, pretty much no one is saying the same things about using AI to replace pro athletes - even though it would be very technically feasible, and save money.

you’d think the “AI can replace all artists and writers” people would have noticed that no one gives a shit about watching computers compete with one another, and yet
giziti.bsky.social
or chess: people play chess, they watch other people play chess, it's even getting a little popular to do. computers are infinitely better than humans at chess. nobody watches computer chess.

The human experience craves intention. The reason we still have humans play football instead of robots despite the CTE is that the human drama of the narrative of each team, wondering who will win, the playoff implications is largely what we’re there for, not the actual product itself.

…I hate the admin. I’ll admit, that is one thing that I might be tempted to outsource to AI (as if it could do it).
But the writing itself?
Dearly beloved, no one can stare into the abyss for me. No one can examine and parse the filaments of my soul for me.
And I absolutely would not want them to.

You don't become an artist who's any good if you don't love the work itself. Even the parts that are a struggle.

What we don't love is the marketing, promo, admin, etc. When you start, you don't think you're signing up to be a wildly underpaid arts admin, but 80% of professional art time is this.
