As far as I can tell, the current state of play is that that proposed "BritCard" is a digital card that sits in a digital wallet that will be compulsory to prove right to work. Except it's not a card and it might be rolled out to people who are too young to work.

The statement says: "This is not a card but a new digital identity that will be available for free to all UK citizens and legal residents aged 16 and over (although we will consider through consultation if this should be age 13 and over).

It's a magical incantation, it's prosperity gospel, it's New Thought, it's the law of attraction.

I personally don't think this "works" in the sense of words creating material reality, but it does have a real effect if people can speak words forcefully enough that other people go along with them.
