One in six species on Earth experienced extraordinarily high temperatures across more than 25% of their range in 2024--the hottest year on record. For most, this was the second year of extreme heat, likely compounding risks. In PNAS: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Our own Vigdis Vandvik will be Coordinating Lead Author on the upcoming seventh #IPCC report, co-leading the chapter on climate change, #biodiversity, #ecosystems and ecosystem services on land and in freshwater. A big, challenging, and very exciting task! @vvandvik.bsky.social

2024 was the hottest year on record, but how bad was it? Our new paper shows that one in six terrestrial vertebrate species were exposed to unprecedented temperatures across at least 25% of their range!

Fair. And since these are McFarlane figures, they're really more statues than action figures anyway, so not much point in opening them.

New in @pnas.org we assess future #climate exposure for 32,089 species of #trees🌳
🔹69% face unprecedented climates in ≥10% of range
🔹In taiga & Amazonia >50% of local tree diversity exposed
🔹 31% of species retain >90% of range in stable climates -> important climate refugia♨️

The total amount of public land that Trump wants to make available for sale is equivalent to more than TWICE the size of CALIFORNIA.

All to pay for tax cuts to some of the richest people in world history.

We're going to find out why a Christian nationalist “Appeal to Heaven” flag—linked to Jan. 6 and evangelical extremism—was flown on a federal building.

We’re filing a FOIA request to get answers from the SBA.

A CONTROVERSIAL “APPEAL to Heaven” flag that has recently become associated with the “Stop the Steal” movement and Christian nationalism was flown above the Small Business Administration (SBA) agency last week in Washington, DC.

Also note that even folks who work outside of China may find this work useful! Given the large number of species and higher taxa shared between the flora of China and other regions around the world, this can be very helpful in imputing missing traits in other reigons.

This paper is part of a growing number that focus on plant traits in a particular region to try make progress on the Sisyphean task of assembling plant trait information. This seems like a great way of mobilizing relevant datasets.

On June 15 in 1940, the USSR occupied Lithuania. The USSR did not care about international treaties. Deportations, murders, and terrors followed for the next 50 years.
Russia took on USSR's legacy, waging wars against its neighbours, yet to be contained.

Sen. Alex Padilla was forcefully removed and handcuffed for daring to ask a question at a Kristi Noem press conference — a chilling abuse of power.

We've previously warned about her extremist religious views and the danger she poses to our country.
