Some ‘fall’ color happening here in #Tucson… well, actually Fouquieria splendens sheds and dumps its leaves quickly in response to episodic rainfall so not truly ‘fall’ colors just correspondence to time since last monsoon rains

This looks to be a fundamental theoretical advance by @jpodwyer.bsky.social et al. Using linkage disequlibrium-based Ne to back out σ² and then predict fluctuation sizes from a single temporal snapshot is a real advance for broad application 🧪🌐https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adu6396
Genomic demography predicts community dynamics in a temperate montane forest
Species population sizes fluctuate over time, and these temporal dynamics play a key role in governing the maintenance of biodiversity. Although modeling approaches have been developed to characterize...

We are deeply saddened by the passing of UN Messenger of Peace Dr. Jane Goodall.

Her life’s work championing conservation, humanity and the natural world leaves an enduring legacy.

Our condolences to her family, the Jane Goodall Institute and all who draw hope from her example.

These results provide a roadmap for biodiversity theory to move beyond traditional patterns, and also suggest ways in which macroecological theory can constrain the dynamics of economic systems 🧪🌐🌾

bjenquist.bsky.social
At the level of functional form (‘first-order effects’), these patterns are not unique to ecological systems, indicating they may reveal little about biological process. However, we show that mechanism can be better revealed in the scale-dependency of first-order patterns (‘second-order effects’).

To test this, we analyze five datasets from ecological, economic, and geological systems that describe the distribution of objects across categories in the United States....
