A great conference to go to this summer – who could oppose unifying ecology on multiple scales?
I just finished attending a great conference (Island Biogeography Society), which reminded me how fun and intellectually stimulating a really good conference is. So here’s my recommendation f…

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

In winter, when deciduous trees are bare, we can really appreciate the form of a tree. Here is a chinkapin oak, Quercus muehlenbergii, on a ridgetop in Nashville. It is now surrounded by young forest, but you can tell by its branch pattern that it grew in an open woodland pasture.

I still remember when Istanbul had weeks of snow (yes, Istanbul!). When summers over 30°C felt alarming. When droughts and fires along the Aegean coast were exceptional enough to dominate the news for days. We normalize too quickly!

The extremely anomalous & in most cases record-breaking Nov-Dec warmth led to record-low snowpack in many areas. Heavy precipitation bolstered high elevation snowpack in some areas in late Dec despite warmth, but most basins remain far below average snow water equivalent.
