This sounds bad, largely because it is bad, but a lot of commentary skips over the fact that, at least at first, it only applies to "skilled worker, health and care worker and high potential individual routes."
And 97% of those migrants speak English just fine.

Incidentally, I’ve been chafing a bit at the “No Kings” thing, because there are loads of monarchies that have more limits on executive power than the US does, but it has the great advantage that it makes Americans who want to oppose it sound, well, unamerican….

When it's applied to a subset of people, and there are no consequences on the people applying it, there is no question this could rapidly escalate to check anyone they don't like the look of.

Wow, wow, wow. This has always been legally possible but the law has virtually never been enforced — and now this is the SECOND case I've heard of in the last month (first involving a person with a green card) of a noncitizen being charged for failure to carry their papers.
