In the Rule of St Benedict, it makes so much sense that a monastic must get their personal Lenten discipline approved by their superior.

We had someone walk out of our Lenten Rite 1 service because of too many references to sin. It was a vestry member! Girl, grow the heck up!

The entirety of Scripture goes out of its way to make the point that Israel came from unsettled nomads and that Christians are always resident aliens in the world; there is no group we should have more affinity with than those without citizenship in a particular polity.
