For OAE, many aspects of OAE have been discussed in the scientific literature over the past 10 years and most aspects of the technology are therefore no longer patentable. (Most aspects of the 2023 patent in question I do not think would hold if challenged).

Short answer, these concepts are just like any other intellectual property. As per any other patent, the patent must cover novel material which is not obvious and has not been disclosed publicly in prior art.

One of my staff asked an interesting question today; to what extent companies can #patent the ideas behind 'negative emission technologies'. Their reason for asking was a company filing a patent that covers many aspects of the use of ocean alkalinity enhancement for sequestering CO2.

Just finished a LEGO build Shackleton’s Endurance. The discovery of the 1915 wreck in the Antarctic in 2022, was only a few months before Victor Vescovo took me to Challenger Deep in the W. Pacific AND with a sidescan sonar similar to what helped find the Endurance!!

Meltwater strongly perturbs the carbonate system in the ocean. Henson et al., use new data from Greenland to show that, as well as driving an inorganic CO2 sink, the diluting influence of meltwater on alkalinity weakens the buffering capacity of these regions 🌊
