The voluntary sector does an awful lot which people believe, wrongly, to be state funded. If charities - which have been hit by all the cost increases affecting other businesses - go under, we are going to find out the hard way how much they actually contribute to the economy as well as to society.

A month or so after I qualified, I went along to a regional meeting of Guide Dogs. Like most people, I assumed the organisation received funding from the Government but it didn't. It's purely a charitable
organisation staffed mainly by volunteers and run on the generosity and goodwill of the public. I was astonished at the costs: training and keeping a dog like Dez throughout his lifetime costs around £50,000.

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers.

This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.

Auschwitz took time.
