if you hear a creative or a creative-adjacent person say something along the lines of “whatever you think about AI, it’s here to stay” they probably just got pAId

I'm perplexed at watching pundits in the trades struggling to explain Tron Ares' disappointing opening.

Was it covid? Do people just not like science fiction? etc. etc.

The main reason is pretty obvious: Tron isn't a popular franchise. Nobody's interested in nostalgia for a failed 1980s project.

With an estimated net worth of $650 million and weight of 68kg, Tom Cruise is more than twice as expensive as plutonium.

Tomb Raider replaced iconic male hero/ archaeologist Indiana Jones with a DEI woman and immediately sold 7 million units. The game franchise has sold in total over 100 million units, and spun off 3 movies and 2 TV series, not to mention copycat TV series Relic Hunter with 66 episodes. But go on.

I don’t disagree, based on what I’ve seen so far.

To be fair, they could easily fix the latter problem if they hired an actual artist/compositor to balance those cuts out, but they don’t seem to be aware of it the issue.

What I’m learning watching AI video clips at Infinity Festival is that 1) AI is terrible at smoothly ramping key frames in camera moves, and 2) it’s obvious when people try to fake continuous camera moves by linking separate clips because there’s always a luminance bump.

Their misunderstanding of how creativity works is only matched by their misunderstanding of David Simon.
junoryleejournalism.com
David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Is he aware that there’s an audience for films outside the horror genre, and that some of those viewers will have more discerning taste regarding what they look at?

Jason Blum says Hollywood should 'embrace AI' and viewers 'don't care if what they’re looking at is AI"

"it’s here to stay. It’s very important to use it ethically and legally, and for studios and guilds to protect the copyright of the artists"
