We think 20th century coniferization policy for ancient woodland hammered & de-stabilised populations of woodland specialists, like Marsh Tits. We'd love to see more studies on this impact. Restoration is needed, but Marsh Tits likely also have other problems, e.g. competition, climate change. /end

Good news is there's now forestry policy to restore PAWS plantations back to native woodland, but progress is too slow. If completed we estimate it could restore 24,610 Marsh Tits territories in Britain, almost double current population. But after 81% decline since 1960s, Marsh Tits can't wait. 6/n

We broadly estimate that forestry conversion of native ancient woodland to PAWS conifer woods affected more than a third of total Marsh Tit habitat in Britain, possibly wiping out a quarter of all territories in 1950-80s. We calculated there's only ~29,000 Marsh Tit territories left in Britain. 5/n
Very pleased to share #OpenAccess paper, which we think is important to understand woodland bird declines and impact of forestry on native ancient woodland in Britain.

A healthy ecosystem requires a wide range of species interactions

Focussing only on, eg, pollination or predation, will not hep ecosystem-level conservation
