As I was walking through a neighborhood with lots of embassies, I was stopped by the police who asked what I was taking photos of. I said birds (which was true) and they smiled and wished me a nice day. So anyway, please download the Merlin Bird ID to use as an alibi merlin.allaboutbirds.org

This is accurate; they are a good source and often the first to publicly write about something.

In confusing times, I often find comfort in WH Auden's poem The Fall Of Rome (full poem here poets.org/poem/fall-rome), especially the last stanza:

Altogether elsewhere, vast
Herds of reindeer move across
Miles and miles of golden moss,
Silently and very fast.

Yes, I stand corrected on a lot of things. (But the articles didn't talk about T's connection with her. They talked about him not winning the prize.)

As people far more knowledgeable of the situation (including Venezuelan friends) have pointed out already, to say that Maria Corina Machado is a problematic Nobel Peace Prize winner is an understatement. Listen to this interview @npr.org did with her one.npr.org/i/nx-s1-5571...

Me: gender is a social construct.
Also me, trying to buy a cable: no, this is a female plug, I need a male one.

This is Manolo. His family invited strangers to spend time with him on his last day. His mom said, "This was such a perfect way to celebrate the life of a dog who truly loved spending time with people and their dogs. Run free and fast forever, Manolo. I will never stop missing you." 14/10 for all

With the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize to María Corina Machado, we're diving once again into endless debates about her political position - with media calling her "far-right" or "radical right."

Oops.
Which is to say: if someone recommends a book by a local author, I'd start with that (I keep meaning to do so myself).

I read Things Are Never So Bad They Can't Get Worse by William Neuman a few years ago, which isn't bad, but also very much an outsider's (NYT journalist) point of view. Which

Also stating the rather obvious fact that the situation in Venezuela, like everywhere in the world, is multi-dimensional. It is possible to be against Maduro and still no big fan of Machado.

I wish articles about Maria Corina Machado winning the Nobel Prize would solely focus on her and her work in Venezuela and not mention that other guy.

I probably shouldn’t post a photo of a spotless starling, should I?

I have so many thoughts and feelings about that Gaza peace deal and everything surrounding it's but then I saw a Gazan journalist post on Instagram "the genocide is over" and I realized my thoughts and feelings don't fucking matter.

Not the main point of the article, nor the main problem, but now I have to add "but not those people" to my "does digital security work for vulnerable people".

Same!

(I realized that when I liked the photos on another social network I was supposed to choose one, but then they had already gone.)

I didn't manage to register to vote in the upcoming Dutch elections which is kind of okay, as I've not lived there in almost two decades, and kind of not, as the country has some crazy politicians and also, I myself tend to have political views that I 100% agree with.

I think also they have historically avoided team codes that are already used as country codes (hence also TBV).

Yeah, I was clearly told this by a CBP official when I ticked the 'tourism' box because my first destination wasn't the conference I was going to attend.
