Obviously I should add this really applies to the 26 only, but for NI there are very strong equivalents with the Stormont Era for group one and the Troubles for group two.

In Ireland there are three generations, increasingly two:

1. Those who remember, especially as adults, pre-1960 Ireland. This is now a tiny group.

2. Those who remember, especially as adults, Ireland before the Celtic Tiger.

3. Those who remember neither.

My own take again is the main difference between the 'two generations' is age.

A large amount - possibly a majority - of 'Irish folk songs' are in this category.

Not often you find election results this emphatic.

Paul Theroux is a great travel writer (although I could never get his fiction). But yes, he suffered from that generation affliction's of writing embarassingly horny prose to kill the mid-century concerned church mother in his head (this is also the context of e.g. John Banville).

Au contraire, I think that hand is going to be very visible.

This Theroux is a fiction writer but is better known as a) Louis' dad and b) a writer of travel literature.

Possible but I doubt it.

Two somewhat reliable heuristics are on the one hand to never overestimate the capacity of the American state, but on the other hand to never underestimate the stupidity of the electorate.
marwoodlennox.bsky.social
Yes, that is also my take.

There's been a lot of doomerism about Trump possibly cancelling the midterms or at least thumbing the scale massively. Maybe, but I'm sceptical. On the other hand, looking at Argentina this discourse is underrating the prospect they will resort to simply bribing the electorate in a very stupid way.

This game was an important part of me growing up. It is a total obscurity now.

The Realms of Arkania games have a special place in my heart, especially the first one, Blade of Destiny. The Amiga version was my first experience of an open-world, free-roaming CRPG and became one of my core experiences in the genre.

Enough that I cobbled together my own TTRPG version of it.
A gameplay snap of the 3D texture mapped medieval fantasy polygon town of Riva that takes up a 2/3rds of the screen.

I think we can now declare it Ramen season.

People have memory holed this now but there were whole bunch people in 2022 who looked at the recovery from covid and declared macroeconomics to be solved.

I think the best way to understand guff like this is a mixture of sanewashing and wish fulfillment.

It's a big part of the story behind O'Dálaigh's resignation, which is an episode in Irish history that has been brushed over far too easily.

Don't forget when Americans seem to think that "leave it to the states" is an ethical statement.

Also the anti-Shakespeare bores but that's inevitable I guess.
