It’s a core First Amendment principle. This is utterly lawless behavior, for which there will be no (short-term) consequences.

That he does it so casually, as they are walking away, in front of cameras.

Rightly confident in his impunity.
“[t]he freedom of individuals verbally to oppose or challenge police action without thereby risking arrest is one of the principal characteristics by which we distinguish a free nation from a police state.”

The interaction illustrates how federal law enforcement officers do use aggressive tactics against protesters who yell and needle officers but don’t appear to present clear physical threats.

Why *almost* every door? What made the difference? Hardware, reportedly.
Dan Jones was jolted awake around 1 a.m.
Tuesday to the sound of federal agents dying to break through his apartment door.
They couldn't get past his double lock, so he went back to bed.
But when he woke up hours later for work, he walked out and found broken doors littering the hallway — and his neighbors missing.
Jones, 27, is among the residents left at
7500 S. South Shore Drive who are trying to piece together what remains after an early morning, high-powered federal immigration raid led to the arrests of dozens of their neighbors at their South Shore apartment building.

Honestly, this is the best and most succinct explanation so far of what we know (and don't!) about the motives of the Kirk shooter.

After I published the story on the school shooting industry, I saw some criticism that it didn't acknowledge how rare school shootings are. That's true and fair. But they're much less rare here than any other country.

And on some days, it just doesn't feel like their statistical rarity matters.

She said trying to buy safety feels very American, just like school shootings.”

School shootings are awful.

School shootings are also VANISHINGLY rare. When I did the math back in 2018, we were averaging 3-5 deaths PER YEAR, in a school pop of ~55M. That’s ~0.005 per 100K.*

Think of how we could be better spend those billions of dollars.

ICE kidnapped her. Held her for 6 MONTHS in a detention facility with conditions so miserable that she finally agreed to voluntarily move to Honduras, which her family left at gunpoint.

I reported on this in the BOP in 2022. Vulnerable people, many of whom were elderly and could have been released safely, were kept in prison even though they were at risk of dying. Really important work from @themarshallproject.org showing just how many people died.
