Today I learned that the French equivalent of German’s eierlegende Wollmilchsau (lit. egg-laying wool-milk-sow,” your special unicorn all-in-one solution) is the mouton à cinq pattes (the 5-legged sheep). I love languages.

📊 #Dataviz PSA: When using areas to depict numbers, make sure you are indeed scaling the *area*, and not the width/length/diameter of the circles (or other shapes). Because software such as Illustrator don’t let you specify the area directly, you need do a small calculation to get it right. 1/2
A graphic with the following text: “The correct way to scale up or down dimensions when using areas to show values: use a scale factor to multiply the square root of the value.” Below the text is an equation that reads: width equals square root of value times scale factor. Further below are two circles of varying sizes. One is labeled: ”Value: 10, Area: 1” and below it a line segment, corresponding to the circle’s diameter is labeled ”3.16 times 3.16 equals 10 millimeters”. The other is labeled: ”Value: 50, Area: 5 times 1” and the line segment below it is labeled ”7.07 times 3.16 equals 22.34 millimeters”.

🚨NEW PAPER🚨
We all know the 2022 energy price shock fueled the cost of living crisis. It also caused a profit bonanza for the very rich. We show the US reaped the largest profits ($377bn) of any country. 50% went to the richest 1%, only 1% to the bottom 50%. A🧵 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
River or sankey diagram showing the allocation of profits from global oil and gas companies to quantiles of the US wealth size distribution via financial system intermediaries, such as asset managers, and categories of ultimate beneficiaries, such as business owners, pension funds and shareholders in listed companies. The scale is hundreds of billions of US dollars, and ultimately 50.4% of profits reaching the US personal wealth distribution go to the richest 1% of households.

Does the news reflect what we die from?
The image presents a comparison of the leading causes of death in the United States for 2023 and the media coverage these causes receive from three news outlets: The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Fox News.

In the footer, it notes the data sources, indicating that the information is based on media mentions from Media Cloud (2025) and death data from the US CDC (2025) and the Global Terrorism Index, with a clarification that values are normalized to sum to 100%.

Yeah, I keep hearing good things about Cloudflare!

But you are right, end of the day I will probably just have to enforce lowercase ids, given the point with the different treatment by the various file systems.

OR: they could also just not change the routing, as any other static hoster?
moritzstefaner.bsky.social
My problem is that parts of the URL represent case sensitive IDs, and hence XyZ and xYz should correspond to different routes.
moritzstefaner.bsky.social
This is a very niche rant, but the fact that netlify converts all file paths to lower case makes it impossible to use for static sites where IDs with uppercase characters are part of the URL. (e.g. using static-adapter in sveltekit). It seems like such a shortsighted decision?

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

Exactly! This paradox is also addressed in the discussion.
