This perfectly captures the PDX protest vibe right now. Not exactly a conflagration.
Photo of cross-legged person in cowboy hat playing some kind of wooden flute next to orange cones and yellow caution tape. The caption reads "Outside the ICE building, which was cordoned off during Noem’s visit."

Reviewing old photos to ensure the new puppy is as cute as Æsop was and folks, this is going to be HARD.
Adorable prancing puppy with black head, black butt, salt and pepper body, and dipstick tail.

Tate: How about we splice together these resolutions to get an amalgamation of group cohomology and homology? It's a little ad hoc, but —

Nikolaus-Scholze: Hold our beers.
Theorem I.4.1 of https://arxiv.org/abs/1707.01799 giving an infinity-categorical universal property for Tate cohomology.

He's a mathematician!

"The Portland Chicken—Jack Dickinson, 26, of Portland—started out protesting at the Tesla dealership, also on South Macadam Avenue, in February but has switched to the ICE building."

A "yes first, details later" deal in the Middle East will certainly work out, no problems. In fact, I'm completely unconcerned about the details — certainly no devils therein.
NYT headline: How Jared Kushner, a Self-Described ‘Deal Guy,’ Helped Broker a Gaza Breakthrough

Trained in New York City real estate, the president’s son-in-law had a single goal: Get to a yes first, and hash out the details later. “It’s just different being deal guys — just a different sport,” he said.

I've toured Reed's reactor and one of the Nuclear Safety Administration rules is that an extra person always be present in case of an emergency. As such, there's always a student in the reactor control room wearing name badge reading "Warm Body".

It's endlessly amusing to me that my office is a one-minute walk from a student-run nuclear reactor. What could go wrong???!?

New blog post! Through a sequence of images, I verify that the unknotting number of the connected sum of a (2,7) torus knot and its mirror is less than 6: I show that this first image is the connected sum, and after changing those crossings, it produces the unknot! divisbyzero.com/2025/10/08/t...
A drawing of the connected sum of a (2,7) torus knot and its mirror image (much modified). An image of a crazy knot I claim is the unknot.

The Active Calculus textbook just sent me down a fun rabbit hole.

Q: How do we know that the inverse to f(x) = x + sin(x) is not elementary?

A: Extended to the complex numbers, the inverse has infinitely many branch points!
Exercise 10 from https://activecalculus.org/single2e/sec-2-6-inverse.html.

To be clear, this is a PDX post. Couch rhymes with hooch if you're talking about the street in NE Portland.
