Save our Bay! As a year-round Casco bay swimmer, I cringe when thinking of the permanent damage being done. Most of us humans may enjoy a relatively brief swim but our fish and other marine life have to suffer these pollutants 24/7!

A triple-whammy in Portland today!
3 cruise ships all idling, spewing exhaust for hours. How ironic that there is a 5 minute idling restriction in Portland but not for cruise ships. They are exempt. Why?

Today in Casco Bay we’re invaded by the hulking Norwegian Aqua cruise ship.

Between 2010 and 2021, six different NCL ships traveled to Alaska and Alaskan authorities cited five ships with a total of 33 water quality violations.

There will be massive cruise ships in our harbor all week.

What damage are they doing to the water of Casco Bay?

How many micro organisms that are vital to the food web are destroyed when they are forced through the scrubber’s sulphuric acid bath?

15 years since shore power was announced to be built at the Brooklyn terminal … and they still haven’t gotten it right. The ineptitude & disregard for human health & climate has been bewildering - and utterly shameful. 😔

More on MSC Meraviglia's multi-day "wet dock" repair visit to Portland, Maine, in this report:
t.e2ma.net/message/6km2...
Night time photo during the multi-day repair stop-over in Portland, Maine by MSC Cruise Line's Meraviglia. Nearby residences in the foreground. Reportedly the air pollution went on day and night, though in most photos it was not as heavy as this. Due to complaints by residents over several days, the city eventually had the ship switch from heavy fuel to a lighter fuel called marine gas oil, which lessened the problem.

“…the 23rd largest cruise ship in the the world, was not only obtrusive, it was also noxious, as its heavy exhaust and scrubber wash soon filled the pristine harbor in Casco Bay. The exhaust emitted a foul odor, and ranged in color from a dirty sawdust yellow to black.”

That ship could be burning Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel and using diesel particulate filtration while in and arriving/leaving port communities. They are coming into ports that they need and burning dirty fuel. Somethings wrong with that picture.
