Bar Harbor successfully passed a citizens led ordinance that capped cruise passengers to 1,000 a day. So the massive cruise ships are a thing of the past!

It is extremely unfortunate that they did not speak to people in the community who see the Faustian (!) contract and are horrified by the environmental implications. cc @vickifromdowneast.bsky.social

The ludicrous size of these behemoths, and that they choose to use the cheapest fuel – which pollutes the most, both through exhaust stacks into the atmosphere and through exhaust scrubbers directly into the ocean – is every kind of wrong.

These cruise ships pollute our air. We can see and smell the billowing exhaust.

But did you know that they are also polluting our water?

Their scrubber wash causes a witches’ brew of chemical discharge directly into Casco Bay.

Cruises were only acceptable when boats were literally the only method of overseas travel before commercial airlines.

Modern day bloated cruise ships are in my mind one of the biggest offenses to nature. Pure hubris.

Today Portland is invaded by the Celebrity Silhouette cruise ship with its scrubber, discharging millions of gallons of contaminants into Casco Bay.

We need to ban scrubber wash discharge now!

“Let’s be clear. Taking a cruise is one of the most polluting ways to take a holiday. Just when more and more people are concerned about the climate and want to reduce their own emissions, MSC Cruises is trying to get customers on board with peace of mind.” #greenwashing #yyj #climatecrisis

In Portland today a massive cruise ship dumping millions of gallons of toxic scrubber wash into Casco Bay.

We have a choice about this water pollution. We can ban scrubber wash & force the cruise ships to burn clean fuel.

What are we waiting for?

The Enchanted Princess in Portland today.

Anything but enchanting.

The ship will dump millions of gallons of toxic scrubber wash into Casco Bay, while polluting our air.

It is time to ban scrubber wash to protect Portland’s port & people.
