We (Algoma University, Lake Superior State University and several other institutions) are studying the impact of petroleum spills in the #GreatLakes with an emphasis on the #winter condition. See image ALT for more details. Thanks to NRCan for funding support. N
A view east of Baawaating (Sault Ste Marie) at dawn in November showing a water sample bottle from an experimental system designed to determine the impact of petroleum products, here marine diesel, in aquatic life forms in the water. In the background is a downbound ship from Lake Superior. The bottle contains water sampled from a high marine diesel experimental treatment and it is reflecting the sunrise at dawn and the distorted image of the ship, which is propelled by marine diesel.

It’s happening again. Now with much cooler weather this experiment will compare effects of a surface oil spill on shallow wetlands during summer (warming) or autumn (cooling) conditions.
Crude oil on cool surface water that spreads but is still cohesive.

“We need to celebrate World Lake Day by acknowledging the benefits we derive from lakes, and then by returning the favour by taking action to ensure that our lakes remain healthy”

John Smol, @sjcfishy.bsky.social & @sapnasharma.bsky.social reflect on #WorldLakeDay: bit.ly/45VwrGW
Opinion: Let’s both celebrate – and worry about – our Great Lakes on World Lake Day
Canada’s freshwater benefits us greatly - and we need to return the favour

Happy Summer #Solstice 2025 - today on the TransCanada Highway outside of Banff, Alberta. Wet snow today - tomorrow daylight period gets shorter…..🧪
Snowfall on mountains with steam rising off roadside lake since air temperature (2C) much cooler than surface water temp. This is the summer solstice, beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere.

Setting up 24 x 1,400-L tanks contains St Marys River water, sediment and plants. Seen is high level light crude oil addition (time zero). Observations of biota (eDNA, phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthic inverts, and fish behavior) to follow. Funded by NRCan - MPRI project @algomau.bsky.social
Light crude added to an experimental chamber containing Great Lakes water. Technician adding crude oil to aquatic experiment.

Looking forward to tomorrow’s jump into Lake Ontario for Great Lakes Day celebration. The Great Lakes St Lawrence River watershed is an ecosystem of Biinaagami waters. We share with millions, from many nations, this life giving natural wonder. @swimdrinkfish ⁦‪@CanGeo

NOAA's National Mussel Watch Program - which has used invasive zebra + quagga mussels to track contaminants in the #GreatLakes since 1992 - finds that PFAS are ubiquitous in the lakes, with mussels in Lake Michigan having the highest average PFAS concentrations www.bridgemi.com/michigan-env...
Study of invasive mussels finds PFAS is nearly everywhere in the Great Lakes | Bridge Michigan
A recent report that PFAS contamination is widespread in Great Lakes mussels give a clearer picture of where the chemicals are concentrated.

What follows if we imagine rivers as having lives, deaths––& even rights?
I wrote this essay about water & hope; imagining rivers “otherwise”; nature’s rights; grammars of animacy; & how our fate flows with that of rivers—& always has.
It’s from Is A River Alive?

RAEON has relied on @globservingsystem.bsky.social since day one. GLOS powers data that drives safety, science & the Great Lakes economy. Cutting funding risks it all.
globservingsystem.bsky.social
Information provided by GLOS supports the regional marine economy, improves forecasts, and supports decision-making and nearshore safety for countless stakeholders. Cutting or reducing funding would have wide-ranging impacts on Great Lakes communities’ economies and safety.
