Talk about the soft bigotry of low expectations but also... progress?
wonder if he gets purged for this

Got this from the folks in Japan. Here, the new PM is performing a heavy metal song
Such an important, honest and clear-eyed presentation. The truth about Taiwanese discrimination against Southeast Asian residents is sometimes best delivered by the person from whom the government most wants to hear praise.

This talk has outsize potential in effecting precious reforms.
Most foreigners living in Taiwan do work that's much more important than mine. But they are being treated worse, have less rights and almost no long-term perspectives.
I had a chance to tell a room full of Taiwanese and German academics and politicians what I think. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L2c...
My rant: Taiwan's immigration policies are WRONG

No "assurance" that Xi offers can be trusted (nor Trump's assurances for that matter), as any reading of his devolution into one-man sovereign will show. Any assertion to the contrary is a political act.

This commentator makes a living from diminishing victims of violence and threats. Beware.
Trump and Xi should exchange assurances — ideally in a new U.S.-PRC joint communiqué — to stabilize cross-strait relations and reduce military activities around Taiwan. My proposal in @foreignaffairs.com: www.foreignaffairs.com/taiwan/towar...

Disqualified in the first paragraph bro

"Taiwan, under President Lai Ching-te, has asserted its sovereignty in new and destabilizing ways.."

1,000% not true.

This. And any – repeat, ANY – Western commentator who buys into CCP oppose-independence claptrap for a country where Constitutional amendment requires a plebiscite is not an expert but a chancer.

Wertheim is a Quincy cog and a hustler; his opinions are polemical, not analytical.
When you hear “truce”, check whose military aircraft just moved closer. When you hear “both sides share blame”, check who lit the fuse.

Autocrat builds power quietly.
Scholar says “pull back”.
Memory of deterrence fades.
Result? Coercion becomes negotiation.

🚨 Several articles coming out this week show there's a coordinated PR campaign to shift US public opinion on China rolling out AT THE EXACT SAME TIME Trump is meeting Xi and seems to be weakening the US backbone against the China threat.

The MSS knows how to spend its money: you're the target 👀👀

Good from @gideonrachman.bsky.social, getting a proper read on what an invasion of Taiwan by China actually means regardless of the US position and placing agency where it belongs, with Xi Jinping.

In truth, the crisis would never end, as Japan learned in 1930.

Of which I am one. He's a Hong Kong hero and a world-class artist. Met him once; a sweet man with a heart of gold.
This one's for the Anthony Wong Chau-sang fans.
Nor should he be. Trump is mercurial, greedy and treacherous, but the Taiwan Relations Act remains the law of the land and will survive the Trump era, and likely be a reservoir for tougher action against Beijing thereafter.

And to this day! The guy knows how to schmooze and how to disarm media alertness. And yes, it still hurts, and there's a whole lotta people who need to apologise for this.
People worry about 2028. Trump won't last that long.

🚨BIG changes happening -- ICE leadership is being purged tonight. The old guard, which prioritized targeted enforcement operations aimed at people with criminal records, is being replaced with Border Patrol and Gregory Bovino's "Midway Blitz" style.

Think things are bad now? It'll get worse.

A Japanese scholar accused the China Times of fabricating his analysis of Taiwan's KMT election and inventing quotes he never wrote. How did the story unfold?

This is the nub. Everything the US needs to change its policy of handling China with kid gloves is right here. It's the law of the land.
The TRA plainly states that “the US decision to establish diplomatic relations with the PRC rests upon the expectation that the future of Taiwan will be determined by peaceful means” (emphasis added).
*sow* panic...
Trump cannot be trusted on Taiwan, no question.

But there are formidable forces arrayed against China that still have Trump's ear. He may "sell out", but – and however this manifests itself – to *act* on it could cripple his standing with the military and sew panic in Japan/Korea/Philippines.

Taiwan is of great importance to Japan. If 🇯🇵PM underscores to Trump how important the preservation of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is to Japan, and how important 🇹🇼security is to Japan, then maybe that will influence his thinking about how he deals with Taiwan when it is raised by Xi,

Why did American policing get so big, so fast? The answer, mainly, is slavery. This is one of those key facts about US history that you won't find in high school history books, and that MAGA rewrites of history are keen to suppress. Jill Lepore's piece from 2020.
