Dragon Quest XI spoilers:

I really enjoyed running around after the credits, taking a victory lap and seeing how people were rebuilding after you save the world... but then it turns out the story's only half over because the actual Big Bad hasn't shown up yet

I don't know whether to blame Merriam or Webster, but one of yous is a nasty bitch for this one
merriam-webster.com
Here’s a primer on ‘primer.’

It’s pronounced ‘PRIMM-er’ if you mean “a small book” or “a short informative piece of writing.”

It’s pronounced ‘PRY-mer’ if you mean “an initial coat of paint.”

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

It turns out to be hard to accept that someone's actions are toward a different goal than your own.

Like, journalists and pundits can watch a guy dousing gasoline all over an orphanage and go "what a fool, that's not how you feed orphans, look at the genius over here, thinks people can drink gas"

Pre social media people used to make websites for Dougs to hang out with Dougs! Same for Shirlenes, Geoffreys, Susan Parkers... I dug up a bunch of them on the wayback machine (thread!!!)

I think being a genuine, informed and effective hater is a noble pursuit; so it seemed suspicious that all the anti posts I saw were of the shallow "I always knew this guy was a piece of shit" or "Let's see his fans defend THIS one" variety. Dilettante hater behavior, IMHO.

working on a new unified theory of american reality i'm calling "everyone is twelve now"
mynameisstilldoug.bsky.social
that's relatable, imho

a few weeks ago my dad asked me "transporters work by using DNA to make a copy of you while destroying the original, right?"

and i got a big ol' eyeroll when i said "i'm pretty sure transporters work in whichever way introduces the most drama to their specific narrative"

Discovering computer as an adult makes you go crazy. Discovering computer as a baby makes you go crazy. In all of human history, there will only ever be one generation to discover computer at the correct age: 13
internethippo.bsky.social
The problem with every post-Millennial generation is they got to go straight to high speed internet. Of course you'll get computer madness that way. Make them start with those old screeching modems and work their way up

I get into arguments about this, and people love to say "actually those places are full of awful people: I should know, I've lived in red areas even though I vote Democrat"

?????????

how does one exclude THEMSELVES from their emotional reaction to "you deserve to suffer because of where you live"?

...I hope that didn't come off as being a know-it-all: I only bring it up because when I started Esslemont's series, I was unfairly expecting it to be inferior in some manner, as though it were licensed Malazan fan fiction; which it very much is not.
mynameisstilldoug.bsky.social
The Malazan setting was co-created by Erikson and Ian C. Esslemont for their IRL TTRPG campaign, so make sure to check out Esslemont's Malazan books, too
