$metaphor withdrawal protocol You were a fractal, throwing rainbow shapes on the wall. I calculated every angle, then lined them all with salt. I spun around and down, a sentient spiral toward the ground. Burned up on descent. Wore the night like a borrowed gown. I tried to read you like scripture, words and lines and paragraphs. The meaning kept shifting on the page. Emotion danced in parallax. The pattern ruptured - like a vein, settled into blue-black bruise. I never felt the impact. I was looking at you. I wrote poems for a cadaver, smiled at a stranger wearing your face. Words failed at making meaning. I kept writing, just in case. I watched helplessly while you changed. I didn't recognize who you became. There was no metaphor left. Only you. And me. And what we made of that.$
