This is the Viceroy Butterfly and I just learned that this is Müllerian mimicry. This is when two species benefiting by looking like each other because both are toxic when eaten!

Earlier this year, we went to the Royal Albatross Center on the Otago Peninsula in New Zealand to see the wild Northern Royal’s that nest there. After seeing a distant nesting pair from a viewing area, I stepped out to see if I could see one flying, I turned to see one swooping directly towards me. This is all I could get in the view finder.

The Reddish Egret, the silliest of the egrets! They stand looking all elegant and without warning burst into a flurry of flailing wings and legs in a hopping, twisting, and sprinting type of awkward dance designed, in my opinion, to make the fish bust out laughing! Quite the predatory tactic! #birds

This cinnamon-colored bird with the black mask and hooked beak is a Bull-headed Shrike. A mockingbird-sized, mini-raptor that captures insects, and lizards and other small prey taking them to their larders impaling them on thorns and barbed wire to store and eat. #birds

A small, mostly grass-green bee-eater with a canary-yellow throat separated from buff underparts by a black line across the throat. Singles and pairs occupy grassy savanna and wetland edges.
