It’s beyond time for us to become far more discerning and disciplined as to who “we” choose or select to invite to the cookout !!! Listen and learn !!! 😃😃😃

America needs, at some point, to start prosecuting white collar crime.

Nevada could’ve fined Elon Musk’s Boring Co. more than $3 million, but regulators are seeking a reduced penalty of $242,800, citing an “extraordinary number of violations.”

We are so afraid to fine rich people, but they've shown us time and again they write fines off as the cost of doing business.

Either make the fines a percentage of the valuation of the company, take away their business licenses, or throw executives in jail. Anything less is useless.

The constant struggle between my anti-carceral beliefs and this country’s need to chase down white collar crime like CBS cops chasing a straggly serial killer who leaves rhyming clues and just offed beloved number 4 on the call sheet.

These guys have gotten incredibly rich by fleecing the government with subpar tech that was designed for rentseeking rather than performance. A smart Dem agenda item would be to build internal tech capacity. The fact that it would punish these guys is just a silver lining.

Honestly, I think it's an especially kind thing to get an old computer running Mint (or whatever) for someone who just wants to email, look at the web, and write the occasional document. They can use that thing until the battery explodes and then just put in another battery.

Bonus: those computers that you were told were outdated can still work. Hey look, just saved several thousand dollars *per school*.

Went to parent-teacher evening. Classroom whiteboard showing stock market widgets.

In a PRIMARY SCHOOL.

Schools: ditch Windows bloat, try Linux. Free, customizable, no corporate nonsense. Just tools built for learning, not trading desks.

Now, if you want it to do really cool tricks, then you have to learn Terminal. Which I have not. :)
orionkidder.bsky.social
Not even all that much to learn at first. The hardest part, depending skill level, is figuring out how to put an ISO on a thumb drive. After that, it's hitting "okay" a bunch of times, and then a new OS is on your computer.

I used to drool over the Framework takedown/build videos, and I still do a little, but for $400 or so, you can get a comparably powerful laptop that'll run Linux by buying used/refurbed, and that way, you don't tell any manufacturer to make more computers when we're waist deep in them already.

Don't mind me. I like to help. :)

how on earth did someone get Microsoft Paint on Linux? i saw a post of one where they had it running.

this is a question from someone who considers moving to Linux in order to avoid their PC becoming vulnerable and literal E-Waste.

Please feel free to ask questions! Here and other places (but not dedicated discussions boards; that's where rejects from the 1990s go to hiss at people). I'm still new, but I always offer help when I'm able.

I personally spoke to a good friend of mine, a woman of colour, a couple years after that who said she and her contemporaries had been using it for years, and she was unaware of that right-winger connotation. Given that it's code that women secretly used with other women, I'm going to believe her.

the social media of everyone marginalized in any way whatsoever, in a nutshell:
pymundgenealogy.com
In the replies: “Are you sure that's antisemitic? Can you please explain it to me? That's not really convincing, can you try again?”
In other replies: “Jews run all the media companies, and their Bronze Age beliefs are cruel and scary to all of us.”

There scene in 1984 where they start talking about Eastasia as the new enemy and Eurasia as the new ally, and then all the BB supporters are horrified that the posters and banners are suddenly wrong, it seems less and less hyperbolic to me every month.
