DHS default is to lie about every encounter. Which is why they’re trying to criminalize recording them.
CHICAGO (WGN) - A WGN creative services department employee was detained by two
Border Patrol officers and later released after federal agents swarmed a busy intersection on Chicago's North Side Friday morning, at the height of rush hour.
WGN is not naming the employee, as station policy requires blurring faces and not identifying those who have not been charged with a crime.
Witnesses on site who captured the incident on video spoke to WGN about the moments leading up to the staffer's detainment. Thomas added that when he made his way down to the scene, around 8:30 Friday morning, he realized there was another person already detained inside the minivan being used by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
"I didn't get his name, although I asked for his name," Thomas said. "He didn't speak very good English. They claimed that the WGN employee was obstructing justice, even though she was, like all of us, just standing there, taking video.'

Seeing Ms. Rachel say exactly what needs to be said to Obama is so damn refreshing
Dear President Obama,
I saw in your statement you said "Israeli families" & "the people of Gaza."
Palestinians have families, too.
This kind of language contributes to dehumanization. Dehumanization is part of what caused so many to stay silent as 20,000 children were killed in this genocide.
I've sat with wonderful Palestinian families from Gaza. They look at their children just like we look at ours - with all the love & hope in the world.
Love,
Ms Rachel

If you've never encountered the details of these events in 1919 and are wondering how bad it could possibly be: its absolutely fucking awful. Genuinely, horrendous.

As a reverend, this guy is both really articulate and politically compelling, and the Robert Redford rugged good looks don't hurt.

A multi-denominational vigil of religious leaders at every ICE facility being protested would also be a powerful political device.

Federal agents aren’t trying to keep the peace. They want violence to escalate so that Trump can declare martial law.

They shot a reverend in the head with pepper balls while he was praying in front of an ICE facility. If that doesn’t tell you where we are as a country, nothing will.

Update: Bari Weiss’s first pitch at CBS — a roundtable with Antony Blinken, Mike Pompeo, and Hillary Clinton that ended up being a virtual interview with Clinton & Condoleezza Rice — has about 150 viewers on YouTube.

Added with the 24/7 CBS stream, it’s just over 1200 viewers.

OTD in 1881, Charles Darwin published his last book, on earthworms.

It reflected a long interest in animal minds: “One alternative alone is left, namely, that worms, although standing low in the scale of organization, possess some degree of intelligence.”

Yes, I keep asking this... What organization is actually developing a plan for the fixes necessary to make the US a democracy? Where's the plan to abolish the Senate? Completely rework SCOTUS? Pass the ERA with additional protections for LGBTQ+? (this is just a short list).

Also a BIG question of what gets built (NOT rebuilt!) afterwards. Trump was just the symptom & super-spreader. The disease goes much, MUCH deeper.

Looking at the level of resistance Trump is facing at this point I’m quite confident his regime will fall, it’s only a question of how much damage he will do before it does
paulrosenberg.bsky.social
you're right. he doesn't have the level of charisma (good or evil) that can overwhelmingly change people's minds. but he DOES have more charisma than the robotic political norm of late allows & none of his followers come close.

I think we need to be crystal clear about how Trump's creation of a nationwide police force—loyal only to him—threatens to create a feedback loop of lawlessness in which our constitutional right to dissent may vanish. slate.com/news-and-pol...
It is now beyond debate that one of Donald Trump’s key goals is the creation of a national police force that is loyal to him alone. To that end, the president has repeatedly federalized the National Guard—often over governors’ objections—and deployed troops to invade blue cities whose residents oppose his administration. He has also transformed Immigration and Customs Enforcement into a kind of secret police that targets, with especially sadistic brutality, journalists, protesters, and others exercising their First Amendment rights. Trump’s multifaceted attack on the Constitution creates a feedback loop of lawlessness: He first erodes the structural limits on his authority, then exploits his newly unchecked power to trample the people’s freedom to dissent.

It's not time to sit back & laugh.

"The administration is doing dumb things, this proves they will fail."

1. They are not as dumb as you think in the areas that matter to them: grabbing power.

2. Being dumb is a feature, not a bug, of authoritarianism. Hiring based on loyalty does that.

3. This thinking is what leads to inaction.
