The text begins: "Either directly or indirectly, I spend a lot of time thinking about–and talking about–dams in the American West, and the broader system of vast water infrastructure that they’re a part of. That’s because large dams exist on most major watersheds in this part of the world, and greatly alter the natural hydrology of the entire region. They are, in many ways, the most visible result of our 20th century push to exert control over the highly variable hydroclimate of the American West using vast amounts of concrete and steel. And they are, inarguably, a primary driver of the population growth that has occurred in the West in recent decades–without those dams, the underlying challenges of water management would likely have been insurmountable in places like Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles that are now home to many millions of people.
