Johnny Cash released his cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" in 2002, shortly before he died - it was an enormous hit, it's hilarious that some guy writing for the Wall Street Journal is just now realizing he was cool

I could listen to Michael Stipe talk for hours. Soothing.

Printing presses kept their letters in cases.

Capital letters went in the upper case.
Smaller letters went in the lower case.

This is why we say ‘UPPER CASE’ and ‘lower case.’

Ok, but what did we call them before the invention of the printing press?

MAJUSCULE and minuscule.

I think one of my favorite subgenres is honoring the crap. I love it when people write really reverently and earnestly about absolute trash.

Like, if "quality is subjective" was really true, my stick figures would be in the Louvre, ya know?

I maintain that taste is subjective, quality is not. People get really mad when I say this, and I'm just over here like, no, there really are objective standards for excellence in all art forms. "Art is subjective" is too imprecise.

Today in I CANNOT BELIEVE I did not know about this word until now:

I learned about snarge.

Snarge: What is...er...left...when a bird and a plane collide. The bird bits, specifically.

Obviously I knew about birdstrikes but SNARGE?!

Feathers And Snarge: Identifying What’s Left After Birds And Planes Collide
There’s a CSI lab for birds that strike airplanes. The species that hits most often? Not the one you’d guess.

My agent: Do you have any short stories?
Me: I've been waiting my whole life for someone to ask me that question.

Ann Radcliffe eating hard cheese right before bed to give herself nightmares, Stoker claiming Dracula was the result of a nightmare induced by a “too generous helping of dressed crab,” let’s go back to the golden age of eating incredibly rich food before bed to create horror literature

You know, this app might be in the middle of repressing critical voices while giving lenient treatment to aggressive transphobes, but at least it's also increasingly bad at book promotion and lit talk, my main reason for being anywhere online anymore

I feel seen. I write soooo slow now. I don't know how to boost my momentum. None of the old tricks are working!

Me in 2020: cranking out one short story per week.
Me in 2025: passing a story like a kidney stone once every three months.
