It is Augustus's fault that August (and then October and December) have 31 days, cause before him, only odd months had 31 days and even months had 30 or less. That was pretty neat and it was changed by Augustus, they say, because he couldn't bear that "his" month was shorter than Julius's.

On the other hand, the asynchrony (september not being the seventh anymore) is no any Caesar's fault, because January and February were the last additions to the calendar, not July and August. July and August were only the last to be renamed (their older names just meant "fifth" and sixth").

It's more common knowledge in some languages than others. For French, the similarity between sept and september is pretty evident; for Spanish speakers, ocho / octubre is not difficult to figure out. In Italian they are all obvious, I guess. In English, a lot less so.
