As Carney talks about ordinary Canadians having to make “sacrifices” in this budget, bear in mind that one of his first acts as PM was to cut the capital gains tax rate, a move which disproportionately benefits the wealthy.

During the election, my colleague Erin and I represented a coalition of feminist groups across Canada asking each leader for their commitment to ending GBV.

This is the response we received from Carney and his team. If you need fodder for your complaint letters to them about cuts to WAGE!

Dear Erin Lee and Julie Lalonde,

Thank you for your letter on behalf of the coalition of anti-gender-based violence advocates and survivors.
The Liberal Party of Canada has a long and proud history of advancing equality and defending the rights of women and gender-diverse people. Around the world, progress is being rolled back – on women’s rights, on gender equity, and on the safety and dignity of those who have fought for generations to be heard and protected. Under a new Liberal government led by Mark Carney, these rights will never be compromised.
We are committed to ending gender-based violence.
A Mark Carney government will continue investments in the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence. This investment will support victims and survivors, prevent violence before it happens, and ensure that Indigenous-led approaches are prioritized in partnership. We recognize that gender-based violence increases in times of crisis and that racialized women and women living in rural and remote communities face disproportionately high rates of violence.
Keeping Canada safe means keeping every Canadian safe, no matter who they are or where they live. We will protect victims of sexual violence and intimate partner violence by:

Making murder motivated by hate a constructive first-degree offence, including femicide.
•
Make it a criminal offence to distribute non-consensual sexual deepfakes.
•
Increase penalties for the distribution of intimate images without consent and sexual assault on summary conviction.

We also believe that women’s economic empowerment is essential to building safer and more equitable communities. That is why we will increase support for the Women’s Economic and Leadership Opportunities Fund, which invests in projects that promote women’s economic security and prosperity. We know that a strong economy must be one where women can access high-paying jobs, receive equal pay for equal work, and rise without systemic barriers holding them back.

I'm also struck by Carney's decision to issue such a loud reminder of the Nova massacre when it's clearly being exploited to justify the bombardment and mass starvation of Palestinians happening RIGHT NOW -- something he has yet to take concrete action against.

In Pope Leo XIV's first Sunday blessing he carries forward Pope Francis's analysis that we are currently living through a third world war fought piecemeal, and he calls for peace in Ukraine and Gaza. Not a bad start for the first pontiff from the US.

Pope Leo XIV appeared on the loggia of St Peter's Basilica for his first ever Regina Coeli address on Sunday the 11th of May. Addressing the faithful gathered in St Peter’s Square and countless others following from around the world he echoed the cry for peace of his predecessor, Pope Francis.

“In today’s dramatic context of a third world war fought piecemeal ... I too appeal to the powerful of the world by repeating these ever-relevant words: never again war!”

A cry for Ukraine and Gaza
He recalled, first, “the immense tragedy of the Second World War", which came to an end 80 years ago, on 8 May, "after causing 60 million deaths.”

Pope Leo then turned to the modern wars plaguing the world today: “I carry in my heart the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people,” he said, urging that "every effort be made to reach a true, just, and lasting peace as soon as possible".

"May all prisoners be freed, and may the children be returned to their families", he said.

He then turned to the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip. “I am deeply pained by what is happening,” he said. “Let the fighting cease immediately, let humanitarian aid be provided to the exhausted civilian population, and may all hostages be released".
