Today is my annual reminder that read_csv() is vectorized and you can just pass a vector of file paths and it will read and append the datasets.

No need to use map or for loops to read in multiple files.

The takeaway:
🧠 Biodiversity effects in forests are not only about how many species but how they’re arranged.
📐 Spatial design matters—and we should take it seriously in reforestation & afforestation efforts.

Our results?
More spatially mixed (heterogeneous) forests:
✅ Grow more biomass
✅ Distribute litterfall more evenly
✅ Boost decomposition and nutrient cycling
🌍 Especially in more diverse (8-species) communities!

Reforestation isn’t just about planting more trees. It’s also about how we plant them.
Using the data from the BEF-China experiment, we simulated how different spatial arrangements of tree species affect:
🌱 Tree growth
🍂 Litterfall
🌿 Decomposition

🌳 Tree placement matters! A new study shows forests with diverse, non-clustered species boost biomass (+11%), nutrient cycling and decomposition.

🚨 Stat tips 🚨

Are you aware of the regression to the mean #RTM effect?

This artefact is often overlooked in #ecology & especially in biodiversity resurveys 🌳🍄🦔🦅🦎🦋🐝🐞 It basically shows up each time you investigate changes between 2 time events: t2 vs t1

Let me unfold it for you 🧵

Single- vs mixed-species plantations: A systematic review on the effects on biodiversity 🌳🌲https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006320725002198

👀 Behind the paper

This study grew out of an inspiring BSc course where students tackled every stage of the research process—from formulating the question to writing the manuscript. A true hands-on (fast) journey into science!

In conclusion:

"These findings show that intensive land use and climate change may compromise the activity of soil microbial communities as well as their respiration under heatwaves."

We show that:

1. "soil microbial respiration was reduced under high land-use intensity [...] and future climate conditions"

2. "heat stress increased overall microbial respiration"

3. "increasing land-use intensity reduced the strength of this [microbial respiration] response [to heat stress]"
