The scraping of Spotify by the shadow library, Anna's Archive, has made it into Private Eye, where the hypocrisy of Spotify - which originally was a pirate scraper site - is brought to light.

A Private Eye article that reads:

Spotify’s corporate team was outraged when it was hacked in December. “Spotify has disabled nefarious user accounts that engaged in unlawful scraping,” its press release thundered. “Since day one, we have stood with the artist community against piracy, and we are working with industry partners to protect creators and defend their rights.” Er, but that’s not quite true.

As Liz Pelly detailed last year in her carefully researched book Mood Machine: The Rise of Spotify and the Costs of the Perfect Playlist, back at “day one”, in 2006, the early versions of the Spotify platform utilised unlicensed music scraped from the founder’s personal music libraries as well as from illegal sites such as the Pirate Bay. Heaven forfend that others do the same!

Those who wished to diminish, or even celebrate, Good’s murder are galling in their moral depravity, their unmitigated eagerness to lie about the circumstances of her death, and their desperation to turn an avoidable tragedy into yet another gleeful spectacle of shared enemies and open cruelty. Few have been as visible in this display as Vice President J.D. Vance, who, from the White House briefing room to his obnoxious presence on social media, has devoted hours and hours to lecturing the American people on why Renee Good simply deserved to die. Vance has elected to make himself the face of Good’s murder in part, I believe, because Good’s life—full of creative ambition, love lost and gained, and queer freedom—is anathema to Vance’s own narrow, rigid gender ideology. The goal of devaluing her life is consistent with his transparently psychosexual and coercive natalist politics and his frequent jeremiads about the breakdown of the patriarchal family. Vance’s target audience—the only audience capable of looking past his mealy-mouthed distortions and middle-management comportment—is bitter, terrified men delighted by any opportunity to enact revenge on a mythical gynocracy.

🚨 Breaking: Israeli forces raided Birzeit University north of Ramallah on Monday, storming the campus, injuring students, and detaining several people, according to Anadolu Agency and other outlets.

At least 11 Palestinian students were injured, some by live fire and others by tear gas inhalation and shrapnel, and were treated in hospital, Anadolu reported.

Witnesses said Israeli troops smashed the main gate, entered multiple university buildings, and fired tear gas, stun grenades, and live ammunition as students fled across campus.

Several students, journalists, and the university’s vice president for academic affairs were detained during the operation, according to Xinhua. Israeli forces also seized equipment and property belonging to student groups, the Times of Israel reported.

The raid followed a student event held in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails and coincided with preparations to screen the film “Hind Rajab,” which documents Israel’s murder of the five-year-old child during Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

Israeli forces entered the campus shortly before the scheduled screening, which had been organized as part of student-led activities, Anadolu reported.

Israel has moved to block 37 international NGOs from operating in Gaza after they refused to hand over names and addresses of local staff. The reason is obvious: Israel has repeatedly used such information to target and kill the most skilled civilian professionals.

After breaking the ceasefire in March 2025, Israeli officials openly signaled an expansion of assassination policy beyond fighters. In May, Israel’s finance minister said the army was “finally conducting a campaign against the civilian rule of Hamas and not just focusing on the military infrastructure,” adding that Israel was now eliminating “ministers, officials, money changers, and elements of the economic and governmental system.”

In the week that followed, Israeli forces killed 12 specialized medical workers. Since October 2023, more than 1,600 medical personnel have been killed, including hospital directors assassinated in their homes with their families. Over 500 medical workers have been arrested or detained, including Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital.

American surgeon Dr. Feroze Sidhwa told Drop Site that demanding staff lists under these conditions amounts to asking NGOs to hand over details of people to be killed. If Israel wants organizations to share names, he said, it should stop targeting and killing humanitarian workers.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry now claims the ban is justified by alleged mistreatment of Israeli captives by an unnamed doctor in Gaza. No publicly available evidence has been produced to substantiate the claim. Putting that aside, using an unverified allegation to bar Doctors Without Borders, Oxfam, the IRC, and dozens of other aid groups only makes sense if Israel is preparing for more of its citizens to be taken captive.

Speaking of a reindeer taking down grandma, a Ring doorbell might be able to capture that kind of footage so you have proof of what happened. But like with the smart speaker, there’s so much more that comes with that purchase. Amazon — and other companies pushing camera doorbells — want you to think they’re making you safer by giving you insight into what’s happening around your home. Ring doorbell ads often also try to make them appear fun, with people putting on a show for the doorbell. But that’s little more than a public relations campaign.

For me, the camera doorbell is the perfect example of a technology that makes people believe they’re safer when really making them more paranoid and anxious as they see their neighborhood and community with deep and unwarranted suspicion. People become aware of things that had already been happening around their home for ages without them knowing about it and they become like big brother, spying out everything once the camera detects movement. It gets even worse when this paranoia meets social media, whether through snitching apps like Nextdoor or the spread of clips on platforms like Facebook that convince others to fear their surroundings and vastly overestimate the amount of crime happening in their vicinity.
