Rey hadn’t realized how far Maz’s was from the potter’s field. Then the tube had been delayed meaning she got there just as the sun was setting. He was there, pacing. “Ben!” She called out to him. “Rey?” He turned, eyes wide. “Rey, you need to leave. It’s not safe here at night.” Her feet stilled as the last rays of sun slipped away. The energy in the graveyard shifted. Two days ago, Rey hadn't believed in ghost. Now, as the darkness grew around her, she was suddenly very aware of their existence. Around her spirits rose, some looked barely human. She quickly glanced over to the plot that held her parents. A sigh of relief passed her lips as she saw no spectral activity in that corner. When she turned back to Ben, she saw the change in him too. Gone was the crisp uniform, the steady stance. His hair hung long and disheveled, falling into his eyes. His clothes were darker now, a flight suit scorched and torn. And cutting across his cheek, down his neck and shoulder, was a long, terrible gash. Rey staggered back, a chill creeping up her spine. Understanding sank in like ice. “You need to leave.” he growled, turning from her, hands coming up to hide his face. “Before it comes for you too. “ Shadows swirled at his feet, climbing and twisting around his legs. The darkness threatened to swallow him whole. “No,” Rey took a steep closer. “No, Ben. I said I’d help you. I’m not leaving. I know how to help you.” He turned back to her, face twisted in anger and fear. “You can’t help me. No one can. Don’t you see. I… I deserve this. This is my punishment.” The shadows leapt at that, seeming to revel in his distress. Still Rey wouldn’t quit. She pulled out the locket from her pocket, held it up in front of her like a shield. “You were right. Your mother came here, Ben. She tried to find you, to bring you home.” Rey’s voice shook, but she didn’t stop. “You don’t have to stay here. You can choose.” He shook his head, trembling with effort. “It’s not that easy. The dark…it’s been with me so long. It’s all I know.” The air around him pulsed, deepening into a black that seemed to swallow the world whole. Rey stumbled back as shadows crawled up to her feet. “Ben, listen to me!” she shouted over the growing roar, though there was no sound she could name, “You’ve carried this alone too long enough. Let me carry you.” She watched as he closed his eyes and the shadows cover him completely. “BEN NO!” She lunged forward, landing on her knees as she watched the shadows twist inwards She could feel it, the weight of all his years of wandering. Her throat burned with the sob that threatened to break free. Then, the darkness burst open into light. Not bright but warm, like the first rays of dawn. Ben stood in the middle, the way he looked when she first met him but… more sold. “Rey,” he whispered as he knelt in front of her, “Rey, I’m so sorry. Did I hu-” “I’m fine,” she breathed, smiling through tears. She opened her palm, the locket gleaming faintly between them. “Maz said you’d recognize this.” He reached out then, his fingers lightly grazing over Rey’s palm where the locket sat. She shivered, but not because his touch was cold. It was surprisingly warm. ““It was my mother’s. You said she came here, to London. To look for me.” Rey nodded. “Maz said you can choose what you bond to. You get a choice.” Ben looked down at the locket, then up at her. Slowly, his fingers curled around hers, the metal glowing faintly gold between their joined hands. “Thank you.” And then he was gone. Except…Rey was sure he wasn’t. Not really. The locket in her hand felt heavier somehow. Warmer. And as she left to go back home to book her flight to the states, she knew he was with her.
