Totally. Sizing might be standardized in Europe, but it's still wild. AFAIK it's just a German and Austrian thing. Not a thing in the Nordic countries.

Had no idea it was a thing in CA.

Interestingly, bring-your-own appliances is actually standard in Germany, for whatever reason. Typically the tenants who leave sell the appliances to the next tenants. I even heard stories about Berlin apartments where you'd have to provide your own sink...

Really interesting story from our archives—

Coverage of a 2017 result by a group that included Omar Yaghi, one of this year's Nobel laureates in chemistry, unfortunately illustrated how inaccurate some science reporting can be. Johanna Miller discussed the episode in a 2020 column for Physics Today.

Column: When bad reporting happens to good science
Researchers deserve better than the shoddy news write-ups that their work too often gets.

also, let me just say now that I really hate this trend of renaming venerable cultural institutions in an attempt to "appeal to youth."

like someone said in another Bluesky thread, I want to know how much the consultants made who suggested the radical move to rebrand the museum from "Philadelphia Museum of Art" to "Philadelphia Art Museum"

a year ago, AI companies were promising "superintelligence" that would make 40% of workers redundant and fundamentally reshape human productivity and the economy.

one thing I'd love to learn about this ridiculous $100k fee for H-1B visas (and which somehow hasn't come up in any of the media coverage I've seen): Is it even legal for the president to just arbitrarily change visa fees like this? aren't those fees set by Congress?

why is the Nobel committee using an AI-generated image (of a house under construction that is being framed) in the presentation for the chemistry prize???

they couldn't find an actual photo of a house being built?

Oh man, thanks for letting me know. Our current site's search function is so bad that I hadn't seen this one!

the thing about Succession is that it wasn’t really satire…it was just reality.

One of the coolest things about working at @physicstoday.bsky.social is delving into our archive and seeing how many famous physicists have written for us over the years. We just added another Nobel laureate to our collection today!
physicstoday.bsky.social
You can add John Clarke to the list of Nobel laureates who have published in Physics Today! 🥳

Here's a feature article he wrote in 1971 on quantum tunneling, Josephson junctions, and superconductivity.

As ultracold becomes easier to maintain, highly sensitive devices based on the Josephson effects may find wider and wider use to measure tiny high‐frequency vol

the fact that the Nobel Committee continues to implicitly defend decisions made almost 100 years ago is just crazy to me.
ryandahn.com
now another member of the Committee says that quantum mechanics has three founding fathers: Heisenberg, Erwin Schrödinger, and Paul Dirac.

they really are going to make me insane with this nonsense...

am I crazy, or did one of the Nobel Committee members say that quantum mechanics was discovered by Werner Heisenberg in 1925? they are going to make me insane—that isn't even close to the full story. please stop with the hagiography! #NobelPrize #physics

Physics students are told their degree is a ticket to anything but during their time at university, it's rarely elaborated on. So Toni Feder has gone out and interviewed physicists with varied careers away from the field (Posts the physicist whose job title is digital experience director...)

yes, obviously! maybe 5 years? from what I gather, most of the necessary work is adjusting station platform height?

it's so blindingly obvious that we should do this. it would instantly transform the Philly area into one of the most accessible metropolitan areas in the country.

and yet our politicians don't even seem to realize it's a possibility...

Every crisis is an opportunity. This is the moment for Dems on Capitol Hill to call a news conference and make clear: Not one dime to fund the federal government until Trump withdraws his unlawful orders and agrees not to send troops to occupy Democratic-run cities

yooooo Old World is one of the best 4X games in a long time. it’s a shame the graphical design is pretty bland and drab (although the event artwork is beautiful) but the gameplay is rock solid. and all the DLCs have been dynamite. nice to see it getting some recognition!
