i find it so hard to ask for things, the more important they are the tougher it gets. how do you honestly say without hedging - guys, it's all a lot right now. without having to pad it with disclaimers or positive vibes. sometimes you just have to speak and let it go, as ugly and sad as it is.

as if wanting to help, wanting to be there for people, can't mean you need help and want people to be there for you too. like your own vulnerability has to be cloaked in this faux display of good intent. sometimes you really just need to let it out, be on the receiving end of support.

i'm sure that's partly true, but it doesn't own up to the vulnerability at the heart of it: i really wanted someone to notice it and say they understood, to make *me* feel less alone, less alien. i hid that intention, as if talking openly about mental health is only acceptable if it's also noble.

i missed mental health awareness day, but this feels like a post-midnight thought anyway: i used to talk openly about my mental health online under the guise that i thought it was good behaviour to model, that people would see it and feel less alone and more able to share what was on their mind

this is it, this is the essay i've been waiting for as a grown ass adult who was a grown ass adult for years before the current age of childishness

But when you’re at happy hour with coworkers of various races and genders and sexualities, you think twice about doing the Women Can’t Drive bit because you fear alienating these folks and perhaps costing yourself financially and socially. This kind of self censorship is an unmitigated good. It’s called professionalism, and it’s required of grownups (I am once again asking right wingers to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and take some accountability for their actions). There is no downside whatsoever to stopping oneself from sharing such fucking awful thoughts and beliefs. And yes, there absolutely should be punishment for offending and demeaning people based on their immutable traits. Society can’t function without constant self censorship. Restraint is key to a society that works.
