In all the horrible news Israel & the US generate when they work together, it is instructive that I learn that Israel’s strike on Qatar didn’t even kill the Hamas officials it was allegedly targeting *from an article about how Trump will personally profit from the ceasefire.*

Hahaha started watching Common Side Effects, the superb new (to me) show from Joe Bennett & Steve Hely & then saw this quote from Hely
seamas.bsky.social
These very true words from Steve Hely have given me tremendous comfort over the years.
Writing a novel— actually picking the words and filling in paragraphs— is a tremendous pain in the ass. Now that TV’s so good and the Internet is an endless forest of distraction, it’s damn near impossible. That should be taken into account when ranking the all-time greats. Somebody like Charles Dickens, for example, who had nothing better to do except eat mutton and attend public hangings, should get very little credit.

I have never related to anything more: Past Bridget is my worst enemy, and Future Bridget a phantasm to whom I owe no fealty.
I envisaged I’d have a job ahead of me the following morning, but that is a problem for future Séamas, who I’ve always considered something of a bore.

My 3yo daughter leads to my discovery of the quantum theory of homesickness: missing us while attending a nursery 15 feet from - and directly opposite - our front door.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Also keep an eye out for the one that has a gloriously self important afterword from Aubrey superfan Charlton Heston where he all but says "if I was a legendary British naval commander, and I absolutely could have been, I would have been exactly like this one".

Have read all the way to 20 over the years, but have never been able to bring myself to read the last one. Absolutely peerless stuff. Ready to start from the start again soon. Just let the bits about sails glide right over your eyes.

Ha, yes I think it was specifically that he reminds me of a non-speaking character they'd gone out of their way to present as so Northern Irish that you wouldn't even need to hear his voice to get the gist.

little did i know it would lead me to an underreported industrial accident that may have released an airborne plume of radioactive debris over swaths of indonesia

Here’s the latest on how shrimp and spices got contaminated with cesium-137, how the FDA has responded, and why consumers should not panic.

I have been studiously kind and wise in not engaging. Did feel like replying to a few with the Wikipedia page for "character limit" tho.

I write full time largely because of one thread about getting high with the Irish president. As cringe as it is to admit, my entire life has been massively enhanced by Twitter and ketamine over precisely the same time that those two things have proven less beneficial for Elon Musk.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Guy I used to play football with claimed his uncle had been in the IRA (not, in itself, a major bit of news where I'm from) but had to quit after a bombing he did that left him with no outward signs of trauma, save the fact he had to "eat all his meals standing up" (a dazzling additional detail).

Fence #26 will be a special on all things print, and in tribute to the storied history of the UK gutter press, our letters page wants your GOSSIP & SCANDAL.

So, we're asking you all: what was the most scandalous (true or false) bit of gossip that dominated your school or neighbourhood growing up?
A photo of assembled paparazzi waiting to snap your shame for the scandal sheets.

Because it feels relevant as we continue to evaluate the media and our representatives’ statements, my favorite way to identify the active vs. passive voice.
A post by Rebecca Johnson:
“I finally learned how to teach my guys to ID the passive voice. If you can insert "by zombies" after the verb, you have passive voice.”

A tumblr respond from mightymur:
“The final, brilliant word on passive voice.
"She was killed [by zombies.]"<--passive
"Zombies killed [by zombies] her." <-- active”
