I still haven't watched that - just been quite distracted and / or exhausted. Another reason to add it to the list. Was listening to Black Messiah not too long ago and thinking we were due another. So sad, not just for the world of music.

Absolutely devastating news. This album is simply perfection. What an incredible loss, what an amazing collection of music to leave behind 🖤

Happy birthday to the US Navy.

And in particular to the captain of the USS Missouri.

Who, when Cher walked out on deck in this, not in the jump suit they'd been promised, went:

"Ah. Fuck it. YOLO."

And later almost got stripped of command for it.

Great! I thought they looked like they could be good for each other, help get settled in a new place and all that. Pleased to hear they've got their therapy badges.

@chloecumming.bsky.social Hi! Just wanted to check the waving bear, comforting tiger and tremendously benign monkey will all get along if left next to each other or maybe they're just pictures and this is a really stupid question.

it’s crazy to think that TRON is still named after Bruce Boxleitner’s character in the first movie, who has not appeared since, rather than Jeff Bridges’ character, who has been in all three. The franchise ought to be called KEVIN

It strikes me as very "we've watched Andor and we're positioning ourselves as the rebels" and I guess there's a demographic for that.
seanedmund.bsky.social
Yeah, and they filmed it over years. Really impressive!

The dog is such a good boy! I met him and it's about as starstruck as I've ever been.

I always kinda knew he was a genius but never really acknowledged it. Then Javelin arrived and it floored me and then broke me a bit too. He really is quite special.

Peter Thiel's batshit fucking nonsense about Watchmen leaking on the same day as this anniversary is exactly what Peter Thiel's batshit fucking nonsense about Watchmen should have been predicting. Loser.

Happy 40th Anniversary of Rorschach seeing the city‘s true face to those who celebrate
The first panel of the comic “Watchmen.”

On the top of the panel, text reads “Rorschach’s Journal. October 12th, 1985. Dog carcass in alley this morning, tire tread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face.”

The rest of the panel depicts an extreme closeup of a city street where a pool of blood runs off into a gutter. On the edge of the gutter there is a yellow smiley face button marred by a single drop of blood that partially obscures one eye.

All feeds into the sense of cultural stasis (not going to drag Joe Muggs in but he's excellent on this topic) An increasingly monolithic monoculture but also amazing things happening all over the place. The increasing lack of shared cultural moments - even Parkinson let alone TOTP - is a real shame.

Don't think they're being taken for granted! I guess I was mainly thinking that they're increasingly uncelebrated and I worry that makes culture seem elitist to those trying to carve out their own space. But also it's kinda always been like that. Good to hear Bristol is still a special place for it!

I'd never heard of them before - this is going down a treat. Thanks!

I don't understand why you'd want to drag Madonna when you could instead be spending your time enjoying decades of stone-cold fucking bangers.

And also if more commentators didn't start their careers in the pre-streaming era and were more curious. On a tangent I was listening to the new Pink Pantheress remix album earlier and it's the kind of pure fun that a bunch of middle-aged male music journalists seem to think doesn't happen anymore.

Yeah, I really don't have enough knowledge to even contemplate record shopping in the flea markets of Athens or whatever so these are like little mini adventures.

Always enjoy these, but this @joemuggs.bsky.social interview with @kaylapainter.bsky.social is particularly good. It can be quite depressing looking at how music is pricing everyone out of all parts of it, but then conversations about DIY scenes you're nowhere near give a bit of hope back.

I love ones with decent liner notes where you get to feel like you're going record shopping with the person who's put it together. Comps like this definitely changed things.
seanedmund.bsky.social
Such a brilliant comp. April Fools by Isis and Yesterday's Folks by US 69 were staples of my very occasional forays into playing out back in the day. Hippies always brings a smile to my face too.
