I am going to keep it real with you. One of my goals for this year was to have one of my books included in a book box because everyone and their mama was doing it. And then I found out that for a lot of book boxes (NOT ALL BOOK BOXES), authors weren't getting paid fairly.

Mina Harker from my Dracula retelling is messy as hell, and I am allowing her to be. Mina's not perfect; she fucks up, and she is going through hell. I have a feeling that Mina is going to get the "Unlikable FMC" stamped on her forehead by readers, but there needs to be room for messy Black women.

The author community really needs to talk about how we are all so worried about art commissions, special editions, and audiobooks to the point that some writers are forgetting about the meat and potatoes of their business: writing damn good books.

Something I wish other writers would understand is that you do not need to take advice/feedback you're given, but if you get the same feedback repeatedly, you should probably listen.
I understand wanting to maintain your voice/vision, BUT that also means limiting your audience.

The other thing I really, really like about Pillowfort, is it's focused on making connections and interacting, not collecting numbers. You have no clue how many followers anyone has, you can only see your own stats. And that's so nice because it makes everyone feel equal.

Kira squirmed, and Kassidy watched as Galen set down the girl of maybe four or five years old. She darted toward the group, running to Rio, who dropped to his knees, down to her eye level. She still had to tilt her head back to look at him, but she was grinning and wiggling her fingers.
Then Kassidy watched in stunned silence as the girl made gestures with her hands. First, she held up two fingers and then rubbed her pointer finger down the side of her palm. She held her palm up toward Rio and then herself, and—was she using sign language?
Rio watched her intently, following every hand movement she made. Finally, she put her hand on her chest and nodded, and he said, “I know, it was a really long time. Welcome back.”
Kira again moved her hands, eyebrows going up and down with exaggerated facial expressions, then clapped her hands together, nodding again.
Rio narrowed his eyes at her, cocking his head to the side. “No, I did not bring you back a present.”

Fun fact, her doll is based off of mine. That I still have. (well, a version of). Except her doll is purple and an elven baby rather than a human with pink.
