The safe and equitable movement of people in this city (with all due respect to the 26 people in council) goes far beyond e-scooters on sidewalks.

The city is car centric and car dependent.

There needs to be a recalibration of how space is allocated to prioritize people over cars. #PoliticalWill

With leaf fall well underway & twigs/branches from storm damage lying near the edge of the road it’s time to remind drivers that bike users will be taking the lanes.
This is national #roadsafety week but our road safety agencies are silent on this hazard.

“In London cyclists now outnumber cars in the City by 2 to 1. Paris, where they now outnumber motorists across the whole city, is catching up with Europe’s traditional bike capitals, Amsterdam & Copenhagen…In Copenhagen, bikes account for almost half of commuter trips to work/school.” @economist.com

As #UHA2025LA kicks off, I’m happy to share here my most recent piece on the Metropole, on an understudied topic in #urbanhistory #envhist —how different lighting tech’s have affected birds & humans over the centuries & what we can do about it.

It’s a dual exposé & call to action Check it out here:

WE RAN OUT OF TIME FOR CLIMATE CHANGE

says Fiona Bruce at the end of Question Time

I loved the audience participation too, though my only contribution was to lend Jonny Donahoe my pen. (Nice catch, Jonny!)
My pen - a grey Uniball fine with green ink.

#ThankYou to the team at Soho Place for a great evening. I enjoyed Every Brilliant Thing enormously. And I met a lovely American couple into the bargain and shared commiserations for the states of our governments.

I also appreciated the friendly guy at the cloakroom who looked after my bike.

Got chatting with a journalist (John) and a medic (Anna) and had the sort of slow, enjoyable early evening that only a relaxed chat with friends you’d never met before can deliver.

Public interest journalism, favourite Birmingham neighbourhoods and the joys of mixed heritage among other things.

Great to have the opportunity to visit The October Gallery this afternoon.
A view of the main gallery space at The October Gallery - stripped pine floorboards, gallery white walls and folded black Brompton bicycle. A work on the wall of The October Gallery.

“Love of charity will provide people in the US with the means, and perhaps the courage, to persist despite the [sometimes poisonous] rhetoric of this moment.”

The closing keynote is a session from Justin Zaremby on challenges to philanthropy in the United States. It is clear, engaging, informative, and surprisingly energising despite the often concerning content.

Saffa Mir and Virginia Henley take on the daunting task of summarising a year of legal developments relevant to charities in just 30 minutes for a demanding audience.
The opening quiz is an interesting gambit.

Another lively session, this time from Matthew Mills of Radcliffe Chambers on the perennial issue of trustee remuneration.

After a sociable lunch, a session on the future of philanthropy. Ian Allsop’s lively, irreverent and thoughtful approach to the issue is well pitched to pique the interest of anyone feeling sluggish after their meal.

I’m taken aback to learn at the end of Matthew’s presentation that Judge Alison McKenna died at the end of last year. I did not know her well but met her on a few occasions and was struck by her kindness and the time she gave peers in the sector while pursuing an impressive career.

#RIP

Matthew Smith’s history of the charity tribunal is typically entertaining and insightful. There is a great deal to enjoy here - a highlight is his tale of a barrister representing an appellant in partial satisfaction of a community service order, having bitten a policeman.

There is plenty to think about here, given the collapsing business model for much print journalism and the honourable exceptions we know well.
