Cycle lanes and LTNs often attract loud opposition, making them seem deeply unpopular. But are they?

Across multiple studies (survey + analysis of 36k UK tweets), we find broad support - especially for well-designed, segregated lanes. Good quality cycle lanes benefit all!

Why do people support or oppose bike lanes? Our research sheds light on public opinion
Research suggests that more consultation about cycle lanes would bring more support for them.

I am extremely saddened to read that Alan Hydes was a resident of Hotwells & Harbourside. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

Every tragedy on our roads is a reminder of the need to make our streets safe for everyone, with meaningful speed limits and infrastructure.

RIP.

Helsinki has had zero road deaths in the last year because they've put the right policies and funding in place.

Bristol and the West of England as a whole needs to tame cars.

We need far better strategic leadership from our Labour WECA Mayor on this.

Reform are proving themselves to just be the Tories with a brighter coloured tie.

They promise a break from years of failure and decline, while stuffing their ranks full of those responsible for that failure and decline in the first place.

The real uniparty is the Conservatives + Reform.

I'm glad that my Green colleagues James Crawford and @edplowden.bsky.social are keeping up the pressure on the need for the Henbury Loop.

But the option being explored falls short of the Henbury Loop proposal

LTNs are, and should be treated as, a public health measure. Councils should concentrate on evidence of harm reduction & its clear communication because no amount of consultation satisfies ardent opponents.
There are some who say we don’t consult on our newest Low Traffic Neighbourhoods.

If that’s the case, it’s worth taking a look at the West Ham LTN engagement report.

This passed!

Greens voted for.
Labour (incredibly given how they usually approach whipping) seemed to allow a free vote on it, but mostly abstained.
Lib Dems and Tories voted against.

Very confusing process, even for a keen observer.
I'm very pleased to back this Green Party motion for Bristol's Full Council meeting next Tuesday 13th January 2026 entitled "A Universal Basic Income Trial for Bristol".

Please have a read and tell me what you think!

A great public statement from @patdbmcallister.bsky.social ahead of today's Full Council meeting in Bristol.

I'm sure I/we are preaching to the choir by putting this up on Bluesky.

If you've seen Hamnet and are as in awe of Jessie Buckley's performance as I am, I can recommend three of her earlier films:

Beast (2017)
Wild Rose (2018)
The Lost Daughter (2021)

She has done enough great work to deserve an Oscar in my view!

Welcome to new Bluesky users.

Here’s how we do things:

1. Always observe the Hambledon Protocol

2. No flisking

3. If someone tealights you, rink them without apology

4. I don’t mind them so much, but tissue-posts are generally frowned on

5. No questions

Good luck!

I deactivated my Twitter account this morning. You might quite rightly ask what took me so long. Hope springs eternal. You sort of imagine some things that you used to love are redeemable. Naive, eh?

Thread: ALL THE FILMS I WATCHED IN THE CINEMA IN 2026

First off, here's the 2025 list.

Secondly, I'm probably going to be a bit more discerning this year: watch fewer films but hopefully increase the quality.

If you get along with the Sadfies' incredibly frenetic style (I can see why you wouldn't), this is pure entertainment. Timothee Chalamet is annoyingly great.

Hi new followers! 👋

I post about transport, planning, local Bristol politics, green politics, and I have a thread of tiny reviews of films I see in the cinema.

You can look at my bio to see what I do with the rest of my time. I have a wife and two young kids who bring joy.

Trump started it.

Reform and Tories are at it too.

And Labour already heading in that direction.

All cruel, potentially deadly and does nothing to fix the cost of living crisis.

Crushing landslide of seats? Sure. But by no means a crushing landslide of votes.

Labour in July 2024 received a lower vote share than any party forming a post–war majority government.

They also got fewer votes than the previous GE in 2019.
