it's by Good Feel, who did Epic Yarn and a lot of recent Yoshi games, so it's got a bit of that strolling collection feeling

but being off the Nintendo leash seems to have allowed them to push you a little more, which is making a big difference to me
siegarettes.bsky.social
it's broken up by bits where you drive a dog robot, and they're all breezy enough to be fun but not overstay their welcome
siegarettes.bsky.social
it's not like, grind your teeth hard, but it is sit up and pay attention hard

it expects you to actually dodge, block and time your hits

the dual drumstick based combat is a fun gimmick, too. hitting them in rhythm is satisfying, and they build on it with unique charge attacks for each hand

played a bunch of BAKERU, the Goemon spiritual sequel and after the first couple stages it ramps up

kinda gives the same energy as 3D Kirby, so I was surprised to see how many enemies it throws at you, and how difficult the boss fights get

choose from Therese's autumn fits
An artwork by Spindle of the character Therese, a trans elf woman who has cyan hair. The artwork showcases 4 different autumn outfits (from left to right):
1 - Therese's hair tid up to a circular "bun", while the rest of her hair is down to her butt. She's wearing a white turtleneck, a golden diamond-shaped necklace, and a long beige skirt with a dark leaf pattern. She's also wearing brown boots with a silver accent.

2 - Therese's hair tied up in a big bun. Wearing a white croptop under a long see-through beige cardigan. Red pants with brass-coloured accents, and red leggings that end just above the ankles, as well as red flats with swirly openings.

3 - Same hairstyle as 1 (except without the floating accessory in the hair loop), she's wearing a black scarf, a white and beige checkered shawl with a diamond shape on the front, and a black top underneath. (only the sleeves are visible). She's wearing a yellow skirt with white accents and buttons, and black open heels.

4 - Home fit, hair messy and free. Wearing a multi-coloured capelet/cardigan thing (idk what it is lmao), a black "night gown" with an opening in the front, and red pants with slits on the sides on the bottom. She's also wearing pie-shaped slippers (That Felt made for her!)

the real funny part is that everyone also has three assists so he has even more utility
siegarettes.bsky.social
I mean yeah how would you like a tracking projectile that OTGs AND a super that's a more powerful version you can confirm off anywhere
siegarettes.bsky.social
that sounds really basic, but you'd be surprised how many roguelikes I've played that feel like the opposite

so many feel like they're designed to reward time spent more than basic mastery
siegarettes.bsky.social
the unlocks give you more variety, give you more leeway for mistakes, and more resources to play with

at least so far, I haven't had a run with a loadout where I win the slot machine and trivialize the game

there are powerful builds I've lucked into, but if I play sloppy I'll still eat shit
siegarettes.bsky.social
side note: one of the things I love is that despite this being a roguelike it doesn't feel like earning upgrades is the point of the game, which is what makes many of them a grindfest to me

the fighting is the game! learning combos, level routing and boss patterns is my motivation for each run!

i've never seen anyone attempt a LuBubu (Lu Bu x Labubu), so i took the dark deed upon myself
siegarettes.bsky.social
a big flavor thing I also love is how each character comments on interactions.

Karl will recite a few lines of poetry or proverbs when you rest, or comment on the craftsmanship of items you pick up, and he has very high standards
siegarettes.bsky.social
the timing is easier than parry or dodge, so it's a great defensive tool and fits Karl's role as the muscle of the group

it opens up new approaches too. for instance, human enemies tend to anti air you if you try to jump at them, but with this you can bait em into a clash and leave them open
siegarettes.bsky.social
multiple hours in and I'm still finding out applications of the very basic moveset

I started with Karl, the dwarf character, and his special attack and is a big slam. ground bounces, so its a good combo ender/extender but kinda underwhelming

UNTIL I found out that it also has hella clash frames

haha, it took me like a whole year to warm up to SOR4 because they wouldn't let everyone run, which seemed like such a step back after SOR3
siegarettes.bsky.social
all the characters have their own unique traits and offense to differentiate them, and the way you play for each differs drastically, with more special moves unlocking as you play, with per run bonuses incentivizing you to experiment
siegarettes.bsky.social
to counteract this every character now has a more standardized set of movement and defense tools, with everyone able to dash, parry, dodge and clash with enemies

it makes the basic movement a bit flatter but god it feels so good to move fast after the restrictions in SOR4
siegarettes.bsky.social
beat em ups are generally structured so that damage is OK as long as you survive until the next health drop. SOR4 even gave you full health regularly.

Absolum is real stingy with health though, and every hit is a drain on resources you might not even get back completely at the next campsite
siegarettes.bsky.social
you can take various paths through the world, with side objectives and secrets unlocking new ones during future runs

there's even a hidden path on the FIRST SCREEN of the game proper.

it really gets you to pay attention to the lush artwork and seek out details that might reveal secrets
