well i think wargaming has both simulationist tendencies ("we want to accurately simulate historical combat") and gamist tendencies ("we want to create a balanced competitive fun game"). this is more an artifact of the latter--like you say, as refracted through decades of sff lore

I’m sorry but this just isn’t true. Insurance companies work the way they do because of the system they’re embedded in and doctors (through professional organizations) are a big factor in lobbying to keep insurance because it helps keep their salaries and other fees high.
