The future is urban. It's here, if we want it.

Ask yourself this: if the roles were reversed and it was a solid blue seat that went from D +22 to D +6, would you be saying "eh, who cares" or would you need cardiac intervention?

If it's the latter, stop dooming.
longing once again for a world where more people are capable of grasping complex and inscrutable concepts like “it’s still really really good for Democrats if they *lose* by a much smaller margin than expected in Tennessee”

So Andrew did worse than his daddy who also ran for mayor in the 1977 general after losing the Dem primary - Mario got 45.1%
Final NYC Mayor results are Mamdani +9.5

Mamdani - 50.8%
Cuomo - 41.3%
Sliwa - 7.0%

"Metropolitan ostracism" - legally bar officials who abused the public trust from living in or (with exceptions) even entering any metropolitan or micropolitan statistical area.

Like keeping Russian officials out of the EU.

So e.g. for Texas, only the white areas.

how entitled do you have to be to think you have a right to speed with impunity
says you. it's complete inconsiderate bullshit. if I'm driving 7 over and see traffic stacked up behind me i move over a lane.

but I certainly have learned that a whole bunch of Californians are entitled pricks in this thread but I knew that already. fuck California.

Interesting. Religious identification stopped declining among Americans this decade, but certainty seems significantly down, & declining comparably in each age group www.pewresearch.org/religion/202...

@faineg.bsky.social that since-deleted post you quoted was of the 2014 study, for reference

the thing is that this is a function we could easily automate away and we just dont, for some reason?
Cops are jumpy during traffic stops because a bunch of cops get shot during traffic stops each year and they are trained to regard it as one of the most dangerous activities they can engage in.

If there is a popular movie you do not care to see, you can simply not see it. Let the noise wash over you. You are free.

This is far down in the list of complaints about this poll, but putting "I" after Justinian and Constantine makes about as much sense as it would to put "VII" after Cleopatra
Cleopatra is the single most popular ancient figure* among Americans. Big potential support base for the "attractive maniac" candidate

* they didn't poll for Jesus, but to be fair I suspect he'd take the crown.

This makes sense. Nero Wolfe went to the country of his birth & talked about the adopted daughter he was permanently separated from & we still learned very little about him
The Benoit Blanc movies work because they know what you want out of a detective:

Someone who is weird as hell but morally strong and, by the end of the story, we've learned nothing about them except that they're still weird as hell and morally strong.

Although I think I was raised to avoid the compulsion to be seen as normal, that is a widespread enough compulsion it should be worked with.

Perhaps its appropriate outlet can be caring about democracy, freedom, and decency. That won't get outdated
This is actually quite brilliant, up to and including the final sentence 🔥

Do San Diego buses do tap-to-pay, or just urban rail?

Nice: rewatching _Knives Out_, found the moment where Benoit Blanc looks down at Marta's shoes.

There's some pithy rewording of this for the fascists in the White House. I haven't nailed it yet.

Something like "They want power, desperately, at all costs, but not to wield it, not to achieve things with it. They want to feel deferred to as people with power."
This has to be in the top ten most important things ever said about left-side political movements. YIMBY/Abundance advocates have genuinely aspired to power and to victory in California. Many of our opponents have aspired mostly to be our critics.

"The Republicans will never vote for the Epstein files be released"... until they did
For some reason Democratic leaders seem to prefer telling voters what they won’t be able to do, rather than what they’d like to do.

If Hegseth ordered a war crime and lied about it, shouldn’t Ds try for impeachment? Put Rs on the spot. They might get a few defections.

Replace Congress's Dem delegation with the California Legislature's, cloned a few times to make up the numbers You'll get a new impeachment discharge petition once a day and twice on Sundays
there's no reason to not at least try and cry foul

My takeaway here is that regulated private utilities are probably possible to do well but we aren't even trying.

California really messed up not buying PG&E when it was almost bankrupt.
